If I'm donating a lot of money I'd probably want to spread it around to multiple agencies. This could very well be the first of many. Looking at the drama around Wyclef's charity (some of it looks like it's going directly back to his businesses), he probably wants to do his due diligence too.

And his family probably didn't want to leave their country, their culture, friends etc. I'm sure there are some nice neighborhoods in Haiti he could move them to.

Oh I agree, but my guess is he gave his familey money to get a better life in Haiti. That is what I would do (i do not know if his family was already rich or not). Many people are very happy with where they life and do not want to leave (leaving Friends, family, work, town etc).

The thing that I don't get is you. Have you thought maybe they like their homeland? They don't want to make a change and move to America?

Where did you come up with this crap about leaving his family in Haiti? The article this thread is based on clearly says "His parents and siblings live in Florida, where his grandmother is desperate to know if her old family and friends survived, if anything, or anyone, in their old neighborhood isn’t buried in the rubble."

"AMY GOODMAN: You, yourself, have pledged $100,000, Samuel Dalembert?

SAMUEL DALEMBERT: Yeah. Yeah, I had to do that initially. You know, that’s a part of my donation, because I was online with UNICEF, and they’re keeping me on track about what’s going on. You know, the Foundation myself—you know, UNICEF is one of the foundations I looked up to, you know, before I started my foundation, and helping the children out and creating opportunity. As one of them brought up in Haiti, see how things work. So, you know, our main purpose was to help the children, and our focus was little children. But in this case, our focus is on everybody out there. So they were able to let me know what’s going on, little by little."

Donating $10 for regular people is like donating $1 million for Dalembert. It's because $10 may be 10% of their savings, while Dalembert's $100k could be 1% or less.

I still want to know what made you claim he left his family in Haiti. Did you just make it up for the hell of it?

Just because he's been paid $50 million over his career doesn't mean he has 50 million in the bank.

After taxes and state income tax he's probably actually been paid around $35 million. He's got a house for himself and homes for his parents, grand parents, siblings. Money he probably already donated to start his foundation.

So donating $100K is probably more like the average bbs member who makes like $35K donating $290 with plans on donating more.

Why would I make it up for the hell of it? I assumed it from reading another article. What do you want a notorized letter of apology?

I hate when people make these claims because they don't take into account the life time earning potential of players is some times only two or one contract. Let's say Dalembert makes $80 million before tax in life time salary. After you take away 50% for taxes and agent fee, his life time in pocket income is around $40 MM. He donates $100K or 0.25% of his earnings.

Now let's get an average middle class Joe earning on average $50K a year and an after tax income of $35K. Average Joe will work around 40 years (from 25 to retirement at 65), it comes to $1.4MM lifetime after tax earnings. 0.25% of that will be $3,500. Now how many of us donated that much?

Good approximation and all, puts it into perspective. +1

However, it is slightly flawed because multimillionaires don't need those extra millions to live comfortably, while the 50K earner needs every grand he can get.

    This.

Plus, how do you people know he hasn't donated money every year to the Haitian government, or some institution like that, over the course of his entire NBA career?

I swear, Clutchfans posters need to install a filter between brain and fingers.

There's no problem with people donating $10. The annoying part is people are being hypocrites, saying Dalembert is being cheap when their donation isn't even comparable to his.

This is just the initial donation.
One thing, how much did Yao donate back when China had that earthquake?

I wonder if those critical of Dalembert's donation have donated?

so he gave .002 of his 50 million. assuming we make 100k a year, it would be like donating 200 bux for disaster relief. not much at all. if houston had a disaster n i was making 50 mil then i think i could afford to give at least a million.
