Looks like the Nats may not be done... Buster_ESPN: There is a growing speculation among rival agents and executives that the Washington Nationals are going to throw a HUGE number at Cliff Lee
I didn't think that was the case. I checked his #'s, and last year he was pretty consistent..1st and 2nd half and month to month. The year before, again 1st and 2nd half were similar. Though he did have a slightly rough 1st and last month. Neither year suggest excessive streakiness from what I could see
Manny Ramirez for the most part with Boston - ultimately Mark Texeira will with the Yankees (unless he gets a career-ending injury) and of course Jeter and A-Rod. But it hasn't been many.
I read somewhere that the logic is that if you are a losing team like the Nationals has been, then you have to make some outrageous offers to guys that will probably go to NYY or Boston. I think it is important to remember that Borass is the agent for both Strasburg and Bryce Harper, so obviously there's a relationship between him and the Nationals FO. Although I don't think the contracts with Strasburg and Harper are that big (they are only big compared to other players with similar years of experience), I don't know how the Nationals are coming up with the money to make a huge offer to Cliff Lee. If they are not careful, they'll bankrupt the franchise just like Tom Hicks did to the Rangers with the A-Rod deal.
Didn't know this since I don't follow the Nats all that closely but apparently Ted Lerner, Nationals principal owner is pretty well off... Chris Sprow: According to last year's "Forbes 100" Lerner's are worth upwards of $3.5 billion. I would say they do need to overspend but looks like they have the money. The issue will be down the road if these acquisitions don't work out because it will limit their ability to make moves when oppurtunities pop up.
