Realistic Celtic Warrior: Celtics logo: Notre Dame logo: Obviously caricatures are acceptable for whites, but not for non-white minorities. I mean Notre Dame are called the FIGHTING IRISH. If that is not a stereotype, I don't know what is. The Celtics have a damn leprechaun. Would it be okay to have a team called the English and their logo be a Hobbit? Would a team called the Mexicans have a chupacabra logo?
The Boston Celtics were named after the earlier "Original Celtics"...created by a bunch of Irish guys. The Boston incarnation was created to appeal to the city's large Irish population. As for Notre Dame, they were originally called the Catholics but apparently "Fighting Irish" came from either the press or opposing teams (because the team was mostly Irish) that the players and university ended up liking and officially adopting. So, in both cases, the nicknames and logos evolved from Irish people and appealed to Irish people. I guess you should say caricatures are OK for whites when they are created or approved by said whites.
Here is a letter to the editor in today's local paper. As I said, the committee the university appointed said the Indian nickname should go a few days ago. The ignorance comes from the writer comparing occupations such as Cowboys, Governors, Matadors, and Volunteers to races such as Native Americans. People choose to become those things, you don't choose to become an Native American. Do Trojans and Vikings and what not still exists?
Yeah, you make sense. Basically you're saying that I should dismiss both sides instead of just one but now I am really confused on how to approach that part.
And American isn't an American word. What's your point? I guess if Austrailians started calling themselves Americans that's ok. Native Americans can't borrow our bastardized bestowed name!
On a related note there's recently been some talk in Minnesota regarding the representations of Vikings as barbarians with horns on their heads, as depicted in the Vikings logo: The Vikings were skilled merchants and craftsmen too and didn't wear horns on their heads. On the subject overall I personally think if it offends most, not all, of Native Americans / American Indians, then I think that the logos should be dropped. The argument that these teams are glorifying them by celebrating them as brave and noble warriors falls flat when you have depictions like Chief Wahoo and psuedo American Indian chants and ceremonies like the Tomohawk Chop. Things like that are the equivalent of having a team called, "The Kung Fu Fighters" with a mascot like this: and having the fans chanting "Ching Chong Wah!" Not all ethnic Chinese would find that offensive but I'm guessing most would and I doubt that anyone would be convinced by saying that its OK because the team is really honoring Chinese by celebrating their noble fighting skills.
