Yep I remember the key club would also hoist a Chief Wahoo type character during the games.

    Edit

I can admit when I'm wrong, it is considered an insult by many. I didn't fully read the definition. I think part of the true sadness of the issue is there is a lot more awareness of other ethnic slurs because unfortunately there are a small number of Native Americans left in this country.

The reason the team was named Redskins is because they were originally in Boston and they had the Boston Braves in baseball and the owner changed the name from Braves the first name to Redskins. It's still a bit perplexing why you would name a team an insult. Even more perplexing why this group wants it back

The original owner was a racist. I did know that, he was staunchly against integrating the NFL

Yep, they raised it after every touchdown. A loving gesture done by white kids in faux-moccasin clothing. Lots of respect.

It's not disrespect, it's ignorance, I'm sure high school kids never thought about the name. I mean it is a public school and the mascot and for some reason it wasn't thought of. It's just the mascot.

Kids grow up still do playing cowboys and Indians. Regardless of the name a lot of kids grow up thinking of Native Americans in that fashion, not necessarily or just plainly not in a derogatory sense. You get to school no one is raising it as an issue why would a high school kid.

    Some things just take time

I attended Lamar the year before they changed the teams name. I never watched team once, but during lunch one day they were selling redskin T-shirts for 2 bucks, and your boy couldn’t pass up a deal

So now I have a raggedy pajama shirt that says “once a redskin always a redskin”

The movement started earlier than that. Stanford used to the the Cardinal Indians. And even had a Chief Wahoo type character as mascot. They dropped “Indians”in the 7o’s after complaints from Native American groups and just went by “The Cardinal” and adopted a tree mascot.

When I went to CAL in the late 80’s there still would be an old white Stanford Alum. Who would show up at the CAL stanford games with a TeePee, wearing a feathers head dress and war paint. You could see the embarrassment of other Stanford fans around him.

It's a fake group - looked into it and they have ties into Dan Snyder - made a few years ago - look on their twitter feed and it's all about the redskins. Basically they were funded with some money, paid a few native american tribal leaders some money to be in it, and then it's mostly right winger who support it. They don't even have their own email server - it's a freaking gmail.com address. It's not a legit cause.

Maybe their opinion would have been relevant in 2020. It is way too late now. The name change is done. And no one is going to have standing to say they were damaged by not having the team's name associated with them. They're a day late and a dollar short.

If I remember correctly - there have been several polls done on the issue and amongst Native Americans, the results were pretty split.

I am friends with some Ojibwe tribal members, they live right across the border in Canada. They are some of the absolute smartest people I have ever met. When all of this was going down with the Redskins, I remember talking to them about the Redskins issue and wanting their perspective........ basically they told me that most Native Americans really do not care. The reason being that they have so many larger concerns and that re-naming the team will not make any materials difference. One of them (Jai), said some Native Americans want to keep the name, because while it is a slur, it is the team that a lot of NA people support because it at least acknowledges that tribes were and are a part of history in North America.... and that a lot of Native Americans are concerned their history and culture will be erased from history.

On a side note, I don't think people realize how bad, to this day, it is in Native American reservations and communities. The Canadians are worse than the Americans.

I'm Native American (Mescalero Apache). I still groan when I see things like tomahawk chops and Hollywood war chants that to me are a bit offensive, and even more the cartoon depictions which I find more offensive. In this day and age I'd think we could come up with team names and logos that don't play on stereotypes, especially offensive ones.
