Christmas shouldn't be a federal holiday. It wasn't until 1870, even.

The President can celebrate whatever he wants, but writing into law/designating a day for religion or religious practice as an agent of the government is a no-no.

We should have a National Atheist Day. One that promotes what we as people can do ourselves, accomplish ourselves, reach our goals without the help of a supreme deity.

It may raise people's confidence throughout the country, because we get all the credit, rather than sharing it with God/gods.

I'm pretty sure every minority has a history month, just no one talks about it. European history month is a bit superfluous, because there's little need to promote it in a Western culture; where the overwhelming majority of non-native historical curriculum will be European in some form or fashion.

Yeah, we may not be a christian nation, but I'll be goddamned if we aren't a Capitalist one. Whole lotta Jewish retailers balance the books on Saturnalia.

"That the intrusion was in the course of promulgating religion that sought to be civic or nonsectarian rather than pertaining to one sect does not lessen the offense or isolation to the objectors. At best it narrows their number, at worst increases their sense of isolation and affront."

It's probably been pointed out but those months do exist.

    Asian-Pacific History Month is May

National Hispanic Heritage Month starts on September 15

Kinda misleading when you consider the federal government never recognized federal holidays at all until 1870....in that year, Congress adopted, for the first time, a schedule of 5 federal holidays...New Years Day, Christmas, July 4th, Thanksgiving and Washington's B-Day.

it's not as if they had approved a bunch of federal holidays prior to that, donny...and then some of those uppity Christians made them add Christmas to the list.

as for the subject of the thread...i could not care less if we have a national day of prayer or not.

Neat info, but still doesn't justify it.

    P.S. Link? I can't find that on wikipedia :(

not attempting to justify it...just countering the implication of your post that somehow Christmas was added later to a schedule of otherwise secular federal holidays.

    Wasn't my implication at all.

My implication was that Christmas was not always a federal holiday.

    That's all.

Anything beyond that was up to you.

    got it. i just ASSumed.

but are you honestly suggesting we remove Christmas as a federal holiday? I'm thinking just practically speaking, you call it a holiday when you still have in excess of 80% of America calling themselves, "Christians."

I don't see it as an Establishment Clause issue...just a recognition that if the federal workforce is anywhere close to the rest of the country, in excess of 80% will be taking the day off.

So let them use an elective day off on Christmas if they so wish to.

Having a majority doesn't justify it, either.

that's great...not trying to be sensitive to Christians even.

but as an employer, myself...if 80% of my folks are planning on taking the day off, we're closing the doors because it doesn't make economic sense, otherwise.

Then if enough people take off, we'll close the doors.

    Shouldn't be mandated, though.

The government shouldn't be "sensitive" to Christians anymore than they should be "sensitive" to Buddhists, Hindus, or people who think there is no God.

Majority doesn't get special treatment when it comes to religion, etc. That's what is awesome about this country.

Edit: Or rather, what WAS awesome about this country. We're not religion neutral as a government as much as we used to be, and it's sad.

If you believe in nothing, then just look into a blank, vast void and blink your eyes. That can be your "prayer" for the day.

I'm so tired of a select few b****ing and moaning that they are wanting to take things from the rest of us. If you do not agree with a specific day, holiday, belief, etc. then just dont f*in celebrate the damn day. Just sit there, with the rest of your b****ing and moaning friends, talking about everything in the world you do not agree with and deal with it. Everything is so negative with some people, it is really quite pathetic.

I hope you enjoy "don't pray/be religious" day!

Soon some will lobby Congress to establish a federal holiday to celebrate believing there is no God after that.

And then after that they're going to make sure they put "In God we Do Not Trust" on the money. And so on and so forth.

Hope it doesn't bug you to have the government endorsing someone's point of view instead of yours, especially since it is in direct opposition/contrast to yours.

After all, you're not a negative person, right? So you'll be happy and have no beef with it I'm sure :)
