Come on, seriously? You don't understand that having the government establish a national day to honor the act of praying isn't a promotion of religion/spirituality?

What the heck do you think praying is?

1 a (1) : an address (as a petition) to God or a god in word or thought <said a prayer for the success of the voyage> (2) : a set order of words used in praying b : an earnest request or wish
2 : the act or practice of praying to God or a god <kneeling in prayer>
3 : a religious service consisting chiefly of prayers —often used in plural

Out of all the definitions, the only one that isn't religious is 1b.

So if we go with that, we're having a national day to honor the act of requesting/asking for stuff?

That sounds pretty damned silly, even by government standards.

Sure you don't have to participate, but where there's smoke, there's fire. You can stand around thinking these things don't affect you, until one day, uh oh, the prayer becomes mandatory. It's not really a far fetched idea. It's part of why this country was founded in the first place. It's all about keeping the line between religion/spirituality and country as clearly defined as possible. My desire to keep out the national day of prayer is rooted in the same reasons I desire to keep out a national day of no-prayer. Government shouldn't promote religion/spirituality or condemn it, period.

Today is also the National Day of Reason (to coincide with prayer). I would appreciate if the government would recognize this day alongside the National Day of Prayer, because I think it would go a long way to show inclusiveness to non-religious Americans as well.

The "don't let it bug you" attitude is what opens the door the door for much more theocratic thinking.

You have to stay vigilant against it.

USA + Religion = Freedom of and freedom from.

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15-October 15. It has been legally recognized since Reagan was President.

There is a slight hole in your logic considering the day has existed since the inception of this country.

Like I said, it is a gimmick, no one takes the day seriously, neither should you, there are no implications that I can see that this country is slowly but deliberately becoming a theocracy of no denomination, but maybe you can see the future, idk.

It's been going on for 50+ years and it's still not mandatory.

Hmmm. Why don't we get May instead of parts of two months? What about the Asians? And the Europeans?

The national day of prayer has only been in law since 1952.

Coincidentally the same time we made "In God We Trust" mandatory on all currency (1955) and added "under God" to the pledge of allegiance (1954).

Considering we're a more religious nation now than we have ever been in our history, I'd say yeah, we're headed that way.

It was not an official annual date until 1952. The day itself had occurred since 1775 proclaimed by the Continental Congress.

And that justifies it's existence... how?

You can't point out the fact that a problem hasn't gotten worse (it has, just not in the direct ways we're using as example of theocratic action) as a reason to continue to allow the problem.

Proclaiming it law and suggesting it are two different things.

Doesn't justify it's continued existence in any way.

This country didn't get so whacky about religion at the political level until the general populace realized that communists were atheists.

well, it does completely conflict with the logic you used in an earlier post.

    Nope.

We have gotten more religious as time has gone by.

The original recommendations for "days of prayer" were not annual, and they weren't law... they were issued by congress and a few presidents (and that isn't cool, either), then it became an annual day by law in the 50s.... inching closer and closer.... no logic conflict

You and my cousin have the very same mindset. He would have said the same thing in the same way except he would have substituted the word "socialistic" for "theocratic."

So what about this timeline makes you think that the government is not getting MORE involved with religion?

Single Day of Prayer (non-Annual) - July 20, 1775 (non-law, recommended by Congress)

Single Day of Prayer (non-Annual) - May 9, 1798 (non-law, recommended by Pres John Adams)

Single Day of Prayer (non-Annual) - April 30, 1863 (non-law, recommended by Pres Lincoln)

Annual Day of Prayer Estbalished as law - April 17, 1952, President Harry S. Truman

So tell me, how do YOU sleep at night, let alone function in your daily life, when you're unable to comprehend the most simple concepts and patterns in logic?

Thank the GOD whose existence I'm unsure of that you are not in any position of power in government.
