i like it all, nas, lupe, young dro, the clispe, i would rather you talk about something with deeper meaning, but if you have good lyrics I'm in no matter what you talk about.

nas had one of the all-time great albums (illmatic), but the rest have been bad to mediocre.

Before the late 80's, hip hop was essentially pop music in my opinion. Cold Crush Brothers, Melle Mel, Fat Boys Curtis Blow were not trying to deliver their listeners meaning. Just get the party going, getting the crowd hyped up and rockin the mic the best way they could. Social and political commentary, reality (keeping it 'real'), and hardcore inner-city attitute got injected into rap and from there hip hop had to have meaning. Sure mainstream hip hop now is more formulaic and watered down, but a lot of those same elements are in place and it gets taken too seriously I feel...

Nas's "Nastradamus" and "It Was Written" (I didnt like it), and his collaborative works with the Firm and QB's Finest were mediocre. Everything else he's done has been above average and better.

"it was written" was pretty good, it just followed "illmatic". nas was essentially broke after "illmatic", didn't sell that much, and he had a bad contract. so he made "it was written" to make money. but the lyrics are still top notch, lot of good songs on that album.

I really have a dislike for mainstream hip-hop right now because it all sounds like it was produced on some $$50 Casio synth from Walmart in 5 minutes.

Hip-Hop isnt dead. You guys are just too old. Sound of Revenge (Chamillionaire) had a lot of jams. TI and the Game have good cd's. Havent heard the Jay Z cd but im sure its tight and Nas is really good too.

Heh! That's the exact same argument I make, basically that "Illmatic" was so good it was natural to be disappointed with whatever followed.

Still, it was not a bad album at all, I think it's underrated.

Anyways, here's a video of one of his songs that I am sure most are familiar with:

Looking back in time, who will we cite from this era as influential hip hop artists? Definitely not T.I., 50 cent, etc. It will be guys like Nas, Jay-Z, Eminem. With those guys out, it doesn't look that promising for the future. Be ready for thousands of more ways of "shaking that moneymaker/saltshaker/milkshake/polaroid/ etc...

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five would dispute that, homeslice. "The Message" was full of meaning.

Man, I hope "hip hop" never dies. It would make us lose sooooo many talented people who sample an 80's loop, and talk vengefully behind it.

God forbid we actually get talented people back on the radio.

Dude, it ain't hip hop that's the problem with radio - it's the other way around.

Radio Rock sucks just as bad, with all its rerun rifts and unvaried vocals. I mean, how many distortion pedals do you have to run a guitar through before you actually sound like you can play it? How many dubs do you need for your vocals?

    Country's the same way.

    Oh, and then there's Pop...
