One time a black guy called me a "snow ape".

I couldn't stop laughing all day.

i so knew you were going there.

when someone says you have "nappy hair" do you really equate those intentions with someone calling you a "black assed ni**er ape"? or are you just using this as an extreme example?

if you equate those two, hey, we'll just agree to disagree because the degree of separation between those two phrases are larger than arvydas sabonis' watermelon head. was that racist? do russians all like watermelons?

if you're using it as an extreme example, my response is as follows:

    "nappy" is not universally negative.
"black assed ni**er ape" is universally negative.

    HUGE difference.

off topic (somewhat), but does anyone else find it interesting that the younger generation(s) could care less about calling or being called a n*gger? to the younger generation, it's more of a term of endearment.

it makes me wonder why we are trying to hold on to the historically negative significance of the word...as if we have to always remember that our ancestors (multiple generations ago) were denigrated with that word.

    just something interesting to ponder....

Since I was a boy I've had curly kinky hair. My Uncle always called me nappyhead, as in "hey there nappyhead". I didn't realize he was being a racist b*stard, I shall have to kick his ass next family reunion.

By the way, next time a white person is refered to as "stringy haired" I will expect the same outrage.

First of all...pgabriel...it's WEAR not WHERE in that context...I bit my tongue the first time I read it, but when I read it again in your second post...okay, now, it's off my chest :). No offense :).

Anyway...I have no idea what nappy hair is, but I really dislike the fact that my hair has a bit of this Asian thing (I'm half Asian)...it's kind of thick and totally straight. So I cannot really do much with it and it tends to look really dorky! (Imagine YoYao's hair and you get the idea!). So how is that kind of hair called? Is there a word for that? I don't like it very much. I'd rather have curly hair or something.

Well, most probably the problem is starting to solve itself. The real problem, though, is that I will not even be able to sport the Jeff van Gundy look (putting my hair from left to right and back again), because the (soon to be remaining pitiful rest of) hair is so damn straight and resistant that you cannot even do that!

    Help!!!

I don't tan, I get melanoma... but my nappy hair is sweet. I keep it that way so you won't notice the fact that it's sliding to the back of my head.

hey guys, there were times this past spring when I was riding the pipe and I'd hear my homies call me a n***** and say wuzzup. ie "yo my n***** do it". But I'm not an African American so I was confused. Am I a racist because I assume n***** means African American or was the guy a racist for using such a potty word.

That **** is deep dude, sick bra. Bri'ghton loc.

More seriously. Hair is beautiful. Grow it if you've got it.

Q: verse, do you know of many "100%" black people that didn't just get here?

Q2: AB, I don't get your poll. Are 25% black people 'inferior' to 100% black people? Vice versa? I only ask b/c you're placing a value judgment on the 'nappy' word. What does your poll mean?

ps, I spent my lunch hour today staring at photos in the Stewart anthro building put up by a few of my professors (they put up some of their photos to inspire the kids). Some of you guys seem to insinuate that there's something bad about the appearance that I stared at (the end of the sentence). Hadza in Tanzania. Others (Ibo?) in W. Africa.

More power to you... do whatever the hell you want... but if you think that straightened out over processed hair is more lovely than what you were given on the way out... then I think you're a dumbass Westerner... or some weird self loather.

Grow it if you've got it.

very few. certain parts of my family are 100% black (of course, that's a somewhat arbitrary #, because it could be 98.9% or something like that, but you get my point...). other parts are creole. i see what you're getting at, though. most everyone is not 100% of anything, right?

as for preferences of hair, hey, it's all good with me as long as it's taken care of. for example, i love cassandra wilson's hair as much as i love the blonde attorney from "alley mcbeal"'s hair. talk about night and day... at the same time, i hated kobe's fro as much as a i hate rick fox's. it's all personal preferences....

i am curious why i haven't gotten a response from Another Brother, though. try to encourage and support a brother and got no response at all...... of course, there is the possibility that he never clicked back on his own thread...i guess.

I don't think that at all, that's why I have a problem with the word nappy, I always thought of it as negative.

But maybe that's just me. If you choose to wear your hair naturally, I think that's great, its just the word, but like I said, maybe its just me.

looking back through this thread, I'm reminded that i had had a few the night that I typed that post. Hopefully it wasn't too belligerent.

    anyway-
I see your point pgabriel. the word doesn't strike me harshly, but it probably would have a few years ago. I feel like I'm reclaiming a bit of myself (having gone back to school) and so what others think of as "nappy", I think of as... well, maybe nappy, but mostly comfortable.

being married is cool. It allows me to have a bit of a minimalist's hygiene. I take a shower, brush my teeth, shave every now and then... and *tadda* there is still a hot naked woman next to me every night.

Hmmm... I should get off of the computer and go shave (bow-che-che-bow-bow).

must remember to drink coffee before I communicate w/ others. At first I thought that you wrote that my honesty was very sexy.

Just remember Smeggums, it all starts w/ tooting in front of your significant other. Once the tooting starts, it's all down hill... you'll forget to shave for a few days, and next you'll start equating your wife's friends w/ "the guys", and you'll let one go in front of them too.

The line of civility in a relationship is drawn at the toot. It may seem harmless, but it becomes symptomatic of a return to a foraging lifestyle (cereal/beer/boobs). Be careful Smeg. Choose wisely.

It's very interesting to see a bunch of guys discussing hair types.

Has anyone ever heard the term "Jew-fro"? It basicly was used (maybe still is) to refer to the kinky-curly hair that some Jewish people have that couldn't technically be called an "afro." In anycase, I'm just trying to point out that extremely curly hair is not an exclusively black thing.

As to whether or not it is "bad" I'm sure most of us would agree that a particular type of hair you are born with isn't necessarily "bad" but could be unpopular or uncommon. I will say, having very, very, very curly (but I'm not quite sure it is "nappy") hair myself - it is "inconvenient" and difficult to manage hair. On the other hand, I can do cool things with it if I spend enough time on it like temporary "dreads."

As most people with very curly hair will probably attest, a good part of my youth was spent hating my hair and wishing it were more straight. But it seems that most women hate their hair no matter what it looks like.
