Great thread but please define what popular means to you. Any project can be popular by a specific audience or genre.

Is it an artist(s) who has sold many releases/tracks or an artist that everybody has heard of? Or something else?

Wanted to say a little more now that I'm not posting from my phone.

A journal published by the Society for Music Theory in America, called Music Theory Spectrum, had a great study of Meshuggah called Re-casting Metal: Rhythm and Meter in the Music of Meshuggah

“MESHUGGAH are the quantum physics of music as far as I’m concerned.”
    – Stephen Carpenter, DEFTONES

“MESHUGGAH continue to innovate without stinting on the aggression. Tomas Haake remains a one-man percussion army.”
    – ROLLING STONE.com

Having trouble embedding. So here: http://youtu.be/kBEUTntgMOI
    Their badass 21 minute song.

Anyways, when in convo with a metalhead, name-dropping Meshuggah will win you some major points. To suggest that there is any other band, in any genre, that is more technically impressive is to showcase your ignorance of music. (OK, that last sentence might have been too bold. But damnit I like this band and they don't get enough credit! This is the one thing I'm really pretentious about. "LOL ur bands play in 4/4 and have choruses hahahalolol")

Another good and more accessible band is Gojira: http://youtu.be/HHaRQzCqv_s

As mentioned earlier, Soldier Thread. Amazing live, and the singer is gorgeous.

My personal favorite up and coming band I'm always encouraging people to jam, Reptar.

I really enjoy Dredg. They had one or two songs that hit the radio, but they wernt mainstream enough. It's good chill music.

Listen to WWOZ out of New Orleans. Programming is all over the map, but usually some interesting stuff.

Especially if you catch the funk, soul and blues shows.
