I am surprised Horry is not mentioned more. He fills in our biggest need and is one of the greatest role players of all time.

    Other options:

Sam Cassell, Glen Rice, Vernon, Dikembe Mutombo (role player?), Mario, Cuttino Mobley, (was Rudy considered a role player?), Otis.

Jon Barry would have been lights out with our current mix of talent and style of play.

A drug-free John Lucas at the point would make this team unstoppable.

Robert Horry and it isn't even close.

But I also like the picks of Mario Elie, Glen Rice, Matt Bullard, and Walt Williams. All of those guys were killers from 3 point land. Any one of them would be deadly on this team.

    This.

Horry was one of the greatest clutch 3 & D role players of his generation -- especially during his first 7 years in the league. His skill set is still a rarity in today's NBA at the stretch 4 position. I'll never forget when Rudy T permanently slid Horry to the PF and started Elie at SF with Clyde and Kenny in the backcourt during the '95 postseason. The results were magical, to say the least.

As much as I love Scola, he was never truly a role player -- just too damn good (24.4% avg USG% during '09-'12 seasons; good for 3rd highest on team behind Yao & Kevin Martin). Oftentimes, especially when Yao went to the bench, he was featured in the post and our offense ran through him. He had a ton of heart, but let's be honest, he was a sieve on defense. I'd much rather go with an elite 3 & D role player (like Horry circa '94-'95) for our current roster and uptempo (high pace) offensive scheme. Horry was a monster on the break during those Clutch City title runs.

If 'position of need' wasn't a factor, I'd also consider:

Mario Elie (junkyard dog, epitomized the term 'glue guy' - nuff said)
Vernon Maxwell (bench/chemistry issues notwithstanding, a straight killer)
Shane Battier ('05-'08 version ~9.0 WS, fell off defensively later)

    Non-3 & D role players:
Otis Thorpe (brought his lunch pail & hard hat to work every day)
Bobby Sura (J was suspect at times, but still a bulldog competitor)
Sam Cassell (only a role player during first 2 years here -- skilled assassin)
Chuck Hayes (highest defensive IQ of any 6'6" center I've ever seen)
Larry Smith (Mr. Mean amazed at C while Akeem was out w/ eye injury)
Dikembe Mutumbo (only a role player while a Rocket -- elite DRtg)
Rodney McCray (86-87 season was stellar, TS 61%, USG 15%, WS 9.4)

At the end of the day, Horry stands heads and shoulders above the rest. His IQ, length, athleticism, clutchness and 3 & D skill set is perfectly suited for a stretch 4 role player -- especially in our current system.

Just wish he had a higher motor during the regular season. Oh well, at least BIG SHOT BOB always showed up at crunch time in big games.

Flyin' Ryan Bowen because we could use a comic relief.
