I just stopped cold turkey. I got tired of biting too close. Now I don't even think about it and I think women with bitten nails are very unattractive.
I am the worst nail biter ever. I have gnawed my nails down to the cuticle since I've been able to, and I have never had the will power to stop. I've heard of putting vinegar or special nail polish on them to make them taste horrendous, which would thus deter the habit. Hasn't worked for me though. It is pretty amazing how addicting this specific pattern of behavior is. Perhaps we were weened too soon, and are still in the oral stage. I do smoke, drink, talk incessantly so I suppose I am a textbook oral fixator.
My main source of nail biting comes from Rockets games! Also tense movies or sporting events as well.
Dude no you are not. That title easily belongs to me. Nobody is even close! I have not cut my nails probably since I was 12. I stopped a few months back and actually did not do it for 2 weeks. Then it was worse then before! I got em manicured on Friday and have not done it since.
Get a good pair of nail clippers and replace the nail-biting with clipper obsession. Keeping them trimmed will discourage biting. Worked for me. Good luck.
I also bite the skin around the top of the nail. I should stop. When my hands get wet and wrinkly from after the shower it's very nasty looking.
On a related note, does anyone just tear their fingernails off when it gets too long? No, I don't tear the entire nail off, but just the excess portion when it gets too long. I've been doing this for many years now, and haven't used an actual nail clipper in about 7 years or so. I'm able to get a smooth edge on my nails by just smoothing over the edges of the nail, so it looks like its properly manicured.
... never tried it... ... ... hey, this is kind of fun ... they're firm, yet kind of chewy... ... and I see that each nail is slightly different, motivating a nibble of each one...
I still bit them off all the time. It is much more convenient plus I then run them between my teeth to clean out plaque.
It's a habit I will probably never be able to quit. I bite the skin, the nails, and there is one finger I usually bite half the nail off of. I have to lotion my hands/nails before meetings for fear of the gas face from clients. It's more addicting than hating the Cubs.
I'm a huge nail biter too, to the point where my front teeth and worn down from all the chewing. I don't think there's any way I'll ever stop, unfortunately.
