    juan,

I can accept, yeah the media is blowing this out of proportion because he's a celebrity, and other circumstances. I can't accept that dog fighting is worse than any form of killing a human being.

that's not condoning dog fighting. in the end by law, the charge is only one year, the gambling is what got him.

for the folks that want to disagree, that's fine, we'll have to agree to disagree.

under the federal guidelines, that's true. that's why earlier i kept suggesting that the dog fighting stuff was actually a distraction to what Vick's real legal troubles were.

under the potential sentences in the State of Virginia, he's looking at 5 years for each act of animal abuse. the penalties are much higher for that on the state level than on the federal level.

I think killing dogs by hand is a lot more sensational and shocking then "nappy headed ho's"

If dog fighting was a common theme, it wouldn't get as much press. But look at the referee scandal.

I mean, media is sensational, and the more sensational the story is, the more it will spread and more press it will get - because the more it will sell.

I don't think it's unjust, it's poetically just. These celebs profit from the media and people's worship of idols.

Is it no suprise that they fall by it too?

Whatever other reasons there are for the inordinate amount of media coverage this is getting (race, fame, Goodell's new reign, whatever), I think a major overlooked factor is the timing of the whole thing. There is literally nothing going on in the sports world right now, and other than Tiger and the Intrasquad Team USA scrimmage, there hasn't been any newsworthy sporting event since the Spurs clinched the title, what, 3 months ago? Two words: "Who's Now?" If that inane waste of air time doesn't spell desperation for ESPN, I don't know what does. At this time of year, the sports media is starving for any shred of sports news they can find. If this happened during football season or basketball season, I don't think it would have gotten nearly this much media attention.

The NAACP has not buisiness in the vick investigation.

A white man get fired for a simple comment, yet a black guy who brutally beats animals should get to keep his job. What a joke

People definitely reserve cats and dogs into a higher class than all other animals, save cute and cuddly endangered species people secretly want to own as pets.

I wonder if they're aware of the countless animal testings animals have to die in order for us to get our drugs and cosmetics to the quality we want. Is that justified torture and murder?

I don't believe in outright cruelty, but we are all complicit by silence or deliberate ignorance for the way we treat all animals...

As for Vick, he's getting what he deserves, and the possible jail time validates the coverage. The NAACP village idiot might as well say that Paris Hilton would be treated better if she crashed into someone while DUI.

I think that's more an anger management issue than an ethical one.

pgabriel, maybe we should give it up. I think you, me and maybe a select few on this board are the only ones who don't wish to see him executed for the crime done.

Yeah, black on black violence is kind of old news.

I think that would be more me killing someone and then saying, "Oh crap, I shouldn't have killed them." As I stated, I would never doubt that it is justified, and I would never feel one bit of guilt.

Fundimentally, my pets are members of my family and I would feel morally justified in defending my family, even post facto.

Gotta give White props for the racial head fake, though. "Vick wouldn't be getting this much heat if he were whi-, errr a murderer." I thought the Association was still busy throwing a wake for the N-word.

Ray Lewis was accessory/accomplice to murder, according to my reading of most murder statutes, pleaded down to obstruction of justice, and will probably end up doing less time and was not banned from the NFL - rather he was celebrated by it for years afterward.

If that is our baseline - then yes Vick will end up getting a raw deal.

I understand there are dog statutes on the books but it's a simple fact that in the eyes of the law abuse of dogs is not the same as abuse of people - rightfully so, IMO - howevder it seems to provoke a less emotional reaction from the man in the street.

In addition there is a fundamental philosophical/logical disconnect between animal cruelty laws and the livestock industry, among other things that is glaring no matter what.

None of these points are new, but anyway those are all valid points for discussion here.

Black political leaders will politically defend and support any black person the same way any politcal group will defend one of their members.

These groups are politcal groups looking for political gain mostly for themselves. (Sharpton, Jackson)

Once people realize this then they can also realize that just because these groups call you a racist that it is just a political move and you do not have to promptly crap your pants.

If Don Imus has just said "Hey it was satire, kiss my a$$" he would have a job today.

By apologizing he validated their stance and gave them firm ground in which to politically advance.

By polarizing the black community they can keep their group more united. Its always easy to keep a group united when you have a common enemy and problem.

We view adult humans as having some ability to protect themselves. We view pets as having absolutely 0 control over their destiny.

Pets are different than "livestock" . Cows do not play with the kids. We do not take cows on vacations. Cows do not protect our homes and growl at potential predators.

Cows are bred for meat and milk and sofas, and premium seating on a Lexus.

    Agreed!

Killing dogs is legal. You own a dog, you can kill it. It is property.

    Torture? Illegal!!!

    Fighting?? Illegal!!

    Gambling?? Illegal!!

I hate how the media keeps going over how he shot dogs, drowned dogs and beat their heads. If these were the only charges then Vick would likely not even be convicted. All the defense would have to show is that he did these acts to kill the dogs and not torture them.

This is only true in the eyes of the law IF it is a household pet.

If someone runs a legit kennel for breeding of dogs the dogs they own are basically livestock. They are being bred and raised for profit, not as pets.

I think this misstates the point. He faced two charges. One was dogfighting. The other involved crime over state lines. The one involving crossing state lines was the one that carried with it the higher penalty under the law. On top of that, the Feds were just days away from adding additional claims against him....possibly RICO charges.

In the public...this is about dogfighting and animal cruelty. Those facts certainly would have been in play in the courtroom as well. But more damaging to him would have been the other charges. And the connection to illegal gambling in that magnitude.

As for Ray Lewis. I honestly have no idea what the evidence was against him.

Yeah, and that ridiculous white Bronco chase interrupted the NBA Finals (Houston vs. NY Knicks) and the finals were reduced to a smaller screen view in the top left of the screen, while the Bronco got all the coverage area and audio.

    GRRRRRRRR......

Sorry, a bit of bitterness erupted there.

I don't want him executed. People keep talking about this not being murder. Yeah, no crap. If it were, he'd be facing much stiffer penalties under the law. As it is, he's looking at being out likely in 18 months...with a maximum sentence of 5 years.

The defense of him is ridiculous at this point. The man has already plead guilty. What's the argument for now?
