Yeah i used to go a lot on mondays and it's getting more and more packed..then i started to go after work around 11pm on Wed and there were just enough people to get some games in.
to elimate the 3 point rules every place where i play just counts buckets as 1 whether they are 3ft or 30ft. we make it a point to call out score everytime someone scores aloud so everyone can hear it. its amazing how even the smartest of people can lose the concepts of simple arithmetic when it comes to basketball otherwise. i dont really call too many things unless its blatant moving screen etc. the one thing i habitually call is traveling when its more than 3 steps, switching pivots or the most common one on the courts the jump stop followed by or preceded by 2 steps. also just learn fundamentals if you have anyone that can play in the post its amazing how little people (at least at the places i play) can guard in the post. and even if you arent that good i've noticed that if you play in the post there is a natual habit of being doubled (unless there is a huge size advantage in favor of the primary defender) so as long as you are a willing passer you can easily set up teammates for open shots
Like supermac said, learn how to shoot. Tall guys can rely on a hook, but short guys can learn to do that tear drop that Tony Parker does so well. If you get it down, it's hard to block AND it'll give you confidence to knock down the jumper next time down the court. Which also leads me to: LEARN HOW TO MAKE A LAYUP/FINISH A DRIVE! So many people can make the pretty move to get to the bucket but once they get there they miss. Learn to finish! Also, if you're just not a shooter, focus on becoming a team player: playin D, rebounding, passing, etc. I know a kid who can't shoot worth a lick, but we pick him up everytime we can because he hustles like a demon and does all the little things needed to help us win.
I play there as well. I'm usually there weekday late-afternoons. I used to play in the old U of H gyms (Garrison) but like another poster already stated, they argue way to much to have any fun.
Good thread. I enjoyed it. Good tips here. I agree with Supermac Also yeah I agree with hustle and playing smart. Emulate your favorite players or some NBA players who you play like..
Yeah I'm going to sit around and debate a call from someone that is playing like a ho. Play the freaking game and play with more heart and skill then the other team. Not by trying to hustle for a win.
"everything else" = Ryan Bowen I must admit I'm one of those guys that if my jumper is off (it's streaky) I will concentrate on setting picks, rebounding, and playing defense.
Yeah i used to play there as well all the time...but that's the one thing i dont like is all the yelling and fighting it's such a waste of time..but sometimes comes with the street games.... i used to go each monday around 6 but got too busy..haven't played in a month but i think i am going to start soon enough.
