giddyup, tinman will give you advice instead of turning this into austin haters and jealous stephon marbury houstonian thread. as mentioned before, west campus has turned to a high rise overcrowded area for rich kids. the cool part of campus is north and hyde park. another alternative is far west, its closer than riverside, but has a great neighborhood. also many people enjoy the lake austin, enfield area. its close to the park and lake.
The freeway construction, the traffic, the strip malls, etc. The natural landscape (hills, lake, etc.) I will give you. It is beautiful and something Houston doesn't have. But other than that, not much difference. Hell, even 6th Street ain't all that anymore.
It probably is better... to them. Who cares about jocking cities and broadly making generalizations about people who just prefer Austin to Houston or vice-versa for their own individual reasons? Who are these several snobs? Just pretend UT doesn't exist for a second, because you're probably just remembering sports centric conversations which do get kind of silly. The words "Vince Young" provoke such strong emotions, but it's just football. Yay capitalism, obviously, sure, Chili's rules, but also yay diversity of establishments who are becoming fewer each year. If you're talking about someone who takes an extreme position for either "side", then yes, we can agree that they are annoying and they need to do more reading. Those people exist everywhere though.
I didn't realize there were Austin haters out there. That is news to me. I've always liked Austin and lived there for a stint as a student. To me, it's all about the outdoors in Austin as far as what differentiates it from other cities. If you hate the outdoors, then maybe Austin isn't for you. lol. I realize that isn't the only factor to consider.
yeah you're right cause people aren't all 21 year olds on 6th street. but i always get that i want to go 6th street (nostalgia) when the htown people come here.but south congress, the warehouse district, the lake. there are way more options than 6th street. the problem is people's perception of austin is the one from college and they still cling on to it like saran wrap. yes there are more restaurants than trudy's and players. there's more stuff to do then get wasted on 6th street. there's more stuff to do than watch UT Football too.
I also find it strange how some people insist on living in one place for the rest of their lives. what's wrong with leaving town and living in many towns, or countries?
i'm pretty much pro-both cities and while the outlying areas of austin are definitely reaching houston sprawl status, austin's core area puts houston's to shame. much nicer scenery, much more continuous urban landscape, much more pedestrian friendly, a lot less blight/rundown areas. and nevermind the fact that it is situated in the hill country, offering a much wider scope of outdoor activities. ps - i will say that houston is making some serious headway, though. a little more urbane development (including rail/mass transist) - especially inside the loop - is doing wonders for our city. montrose/upper kirby, west u/rice village, the medical center. midtown, east end, rice military, the heights, over to uptown... we just need to continue to densify these areas and everything in between.
Why can't you love both Houston and Austin? I'd love to move back there, but I would miss Houston terribly. I'll end up in the Hill Country one day, though.
i lived in tarrytown right off of enfield and mopac for a little over a year and absolutely LOVED it. i could get to lake austin, downtown, south lamar/ south 1st/ soco, west campus, north campus/hyde park all in a matter of minutes, most of the time w/o even touching a freeway. not the cheapest area, though.
Something Houston will never have sxsw acl live music every corner you turn Red River atmosphere 15-20minutes driving distance to almost anywhere I've moved to Austin back in 97 for college and I don't think I am leaving this city unless I plan to move to SanFran or NY
You've obviously never tried going east or west... By the way, the Austin hate on here is hilarious. Y'all are cute.
