I saw this happen once as well ~ I believe Redfish school them up against the beach then start feeding. Of course all the other fish know what is happening and join the buffet. When I saw it the area was probably 4 times as large and the mullets where so thick in the water they knocked the surf flat. They were swimming and jumping up on the beach in the hundreds ~ the sharks would jump out of the water on top of them pretty cool stuff.
Probably not the time nor the place but, um, your friend is pretty hot. You are an honest man. I hope she heals up and starts modeling. Your story is amazing and I am thankful that you and your other friends were not hurt. Scary. Chance
We went swimming south of Galv State park 2 weeks ago and close to 61st street this past weekend. I notice a lot more small fish jumping out of water than I used to see. We also saw a couple of Dolphins both times, very close to shore. They must be feeding on the small fish. My guess is the sharks are also nearby.
Wow, she's from Tiki. I didn't know people lived there year-round! I used to go there often when my relatives owned a beach-house there. After some years, a storm blew through and emptied the insides of the house out. I can't believe folks live there year-round.
Wow, how did I miss this the first time ~ you guys were clearly attacked by mullets. They usually go for the neck first, but their trajectory will often be off resulting in a thunk on the head instead of a bite. You are very lucky. Mullet = Salt Water Piranha...
Eh, I'm not too concerned about it. Sharks typically don't aggressively go after people. If you harass a shark it'll come after you. If you're bleeding, you might attract it. If you're in its way while it's feeding, you might get bit.
Ok, guys. The reason I jetted just when Spiderman got there is..... I am Spiderman. And I'm 87% certain Aquaman is to blame. Oh, Aquaman will pay.
Are you kidding me? What a Monty Python way to go out. A herring? Man I'd still rather take my chance against the flying tuna than the shark. My head smelled like fish for 10 seconds, her foot was severely altered. I think I got lucky there. Sharks are like lightning striking they're so quick and random but I know they're usually not aggressive. It had to have been the fish. In retrospect I feel kind of stupid for not knowing that. The supervisor guy asked if she had any cuts previously but we sure didn't see anything so it wasn't from blood. We were just in their feeding path and they've got worse court vission than Steve Francis.
I've never been bitten but I've gone wade fishing and caught a few. It makes you a lil bit uneasy when you realize you've hooked a shark, and he's heading for your ass. hope your friends heals up.
What would be worse... being infected with the "flesh eating" bacteria OR being attacked by a shark [CHRON.COM] Doctors have amputated both legs of a Houston man who contracted a bacterial infection while wade fishing in Port O'Connor bay earlier this month.
Some folks renting the house two doors down from us at Jamaica Beach have been shark fishing almost every day for the last couple of weeks. We watched them over the weekend and they caught 7 sharks, one about 6' long and 70 lbs. Mostly they have been 300 - 500 yards off shore using a SeaDoo but when you get a north wind like the cool front this week it knocks the surf flat and the fish come in closer to shore. I've never worried about getting bitten by sharksthough, the odds are astronomical if you don't have a stringer of fish hanging off of you. However in flat water you want to be a little careful, it is a jungle out there. The funniest thing I ever saw though was last year, the public parking area was packed with tourist and a school of dolphins comes swimming by. It was like a scene out of Jaws, all the mommies were screaming at their kids to get out of the water and everbody was in a dead panic scrambling up on the beach. I was just paddling around laughing and this woman come running down the beach yelling Sharks! Sharks! I told her no, those are just dolphins and she said " Are you prepared to risk your life on that?" People are such a trip.
It's odd that this attack and the one on the boy were both small sharks. Usually, they give human a fairly wide berth (we are significantly bigger than them). When I was at marine biology camp and were clearing our nets, we were always much more worried about the stingrays than the sharks. There are some bigger sharks out there, but there isn't a big enough food supply close to shore to keep a big shark happy. So these attacks wouldn't deter me from swimming in Galveston. Unless of course I heard that these small sharks were actually genetically altered to be more like pirhana.
That is strange indeed. I'm glad she will be ok. I think about Shark attacks sometimes. I just started surfing recently, and sometimes seals will be in the waves right by the line-up. I know they are shark food, so I get a little worried, but I know that even still the chances are against getting attacked. I'm in Southern California, and I think there hasn't been a shark attack south of Santa Barbara in decades or something. Maybe that's just the rumor going around, or maybe it wasn't a 'fatal' attack south of Santa Barbara. I hope the rumors are true because it makes me feel safer. It does make me think, however.
So wait...let me get this straight. She has a boyfriend? Or the paper thought you or your friend was her boyfriend? Are you going to go check on her and take her flowers in the hospital and try to be her boyfriend? We need answers.
happened to a friend of mine, but they saved his leg but it looks like hamburger still two years later...they didn't close the wound, just had him keep packing it to rid his body of the infection. He was in the hospital for two weeks and is altered forever, though not as much as the man who had his legs amputated. Having seen what I've seen, I'd encourage anyone to get to the doctor if you get sick (even if you think it's the flu) after wade fishing.
The fishing reports have all said that the beach has been on fire as of late, so it does look that bait fish are up against the sand. As for Tiki island, that place is awesome. Many people live there year round....and with good reason. If you're an affluent fisherman (and any fisherman with a decent size new boat has to be making some bank), Tiki island is the pinnacle (although Harborwalk might give it a run for it's money). I drove up and down ever street in Tiki a few weeks ago looking for a bargain, and there are some beautiful homes there. Not all of them, mind you--but many of them are just stunning. And having lived in Omega Bay (just north of Tiki), I can tell you people with green thumbs that tropicals grow there like crazy. I'd love to live there.
Thanks HL, I appreciate the wisdom. It makes me feel better. I'll know to approach shore if I see schooling fish in flat surf. Better them than me or mine (or any BBS member)...
She has a bf but he wasn't there until after the fact. We actually did stuff shark related which is more meaningful I think. The reports have it all screwed up but its not something they really need to report on that accurately.
