Yup winters are colder, and if you count heat index, summers are pretty much the same, I guess. Raw temps in the summer are usually a few degrees hotter than Houston. We get about 20-40 freezing days and low temps hit the low 20's and sometimes teens every year. I hope what's coming this/next week isn't indicative what the summer is going to be like, because if it is, we're screwed and I'm going to need a new AC and Texas may need a new power grid. I actually would probably love living in Houston again more than Dallas simply because of the closer proximity to seafood, but if weather was the only decision maker, I'd risk the hail, crazy Spring weather, and frozen pipes bursting in Dallas before I'd try to risk a hurricane/floods in Houston. That being said, I'm pretty much over big cities. The only reason I've stayed around here is to be closer to my parents who are in Houston (and waiting to see if H.R. 1321 ever passes. lol.). It's also the only reason I've thought about moving back. I think I'd prefer places like Colorado, NW Arkansas, Carolinas, etc. even if I have to put up with some snow, which I hate.
Idk why I've never spent much time in snow or frigid areas but the few times I've been in it just makes me want to be in it more. Being hot sucks. I read most men don't move more than 20 miles away from their moms, or something like that. I've always been close to my parents, they're only like 3 miles away now but I only see them once a month. I feel like Dallas isn't that far really, making this move would force us to be more intentional about spending time together.
Only place I've been that's worse is South Carolina. Feels like breathing water and I don't have gills!
I don't comment on my late brother. You could say he made sacrifices for the family, but you could also say he liked to run his mouth. Things didn't work out for him.
I left in 2017 and moved to Central Texas. I haven't looked back. I don't miss that humidity or mosquitos. I do miss the greenery a bit. I also feel like pulling my hair out when driving in Houston. The insane amount of drivers on the road, tried going to the zoo one weekend and the traffic, lack of parking, etc was insane. I have zero desire to return, and I only see myself going back to Houston if a new role blues me or if the water with $$$. Otherwise we're happy in CTX, around family etc. I've lived in Switzerland, Malta, Saudi Arabia, and multiple cities in Texas (north, deep east, South East).
We're from Texas, there's no mudbutt/redass season that can compare. I can deal. Where is this magical place in CenTex with no humidity or mosquitos?
I always wanted to move to the Research Triangle area of North Carolina when I was younger. Great food in the Carolinas, great scenery, similar Houston weather, multiple other states/things to see not too far away, the ocean, etc. I actually think the DFW area is a more "comfortable" area to live in than Houston in terms of weather, but you get used to each one after a while. I was used to riding my bike for miles in 95-degree heat and then playing basketball in Houston. Nowadays as soon as I open my car door, my only thought is "how the hell did I go outside in this kind of weather when I lived here?" Modern engineering at its finest. Ever notice he has that "Imma slap the mess outta somebody if they took off without me..." look?
Raleigh/Durham, Greenville...I love visiting Savannah & Charleston, Wilmington and up that coast. My cousin lives in Knoxville and it's a fantastic place if you can handle the winters. I've thought about Ashville, but it's a long way to the beach from there.
I left Houston in 2009 and Austin (area) in 2021. I'm back for a 2 week visit and Texas pretty much sucks other than the TexMex, Shipley's and HEB. Only a serious health issue would force me to move back and even then I'd probably stay in my new home state and enjoy the compassionate end of life laws we have on the books if that is a necessity.
