My kneejerk reaction to bad driving: It's someone texting.

    ^^

Forgive my response, but I don't think mentioning "I use a blackberry" and "my phone is querty" really makes it any better, sir. You're still "thinking" about the text, not concentrating on the task at hand [driving], so it makes it worse.

Just NO TEXTING is better than texting at all. Just admit you text. I will not accept that you have to glance every now and then at the screen... or don't you?

Still, it's dangerous, whether with a blackberry or anything else.

I recently got a bluetooth earpiece and rarely take off my eyes off the road at all and will answer EVERY phone call with both hands on the wheel.

Banning of cell phone use while driving was discussed in D&D weeks ago. There's so many things people do on the road that can be considered a distraction...

I dont like all our freedoms being taken away. But the texting thing certainly merits discussion. I think people arent as capable of multi-tasking as they want to believe

They've banned cell and text use here in CA. Could just be me but I actually feel lessed stressed on the commute. I'd say 98% of what you get by text while driving CAN wait. And its been a GREAT alibi when I dont want to talk, any time of the day. "Oh sorry I couldnt talk. I was DRIVING when you called"

I'll admit, texting while driving IS a distraction, but talking on the phone while driving?? C'mon, you gotta be a dumbass to lose concentration when driving. Its the same people that cant walk and chew gum at the same time...

Haha, seriously. Is talking on the phone any worse than having a person sitting shotgun and having a conversation with them while you drive (a situation which is pretty much universally accepted)?

It's not the same thing. Having another person in the car means possibly having another set of eyes on the road and being aware of what is around you.

That's totally different, in my opinion. "Talking on the phone" requires holding the phone and periodically grabbing other things (that's NOT what she said) like a pen to write down information, dialing, etc. Please don't compare a companion offering a conversation to an object. It's different.

I bought a bluetooth hands-free earpiece thingiemajig for that sole purpose. I will keep my hand on the wheel and my eyes on the road at all times.

Let's get real about it. It's not just texting. It's an overall lack of consideration for other humans that leads to this sort of crummy driving, and all these accidents.

The lack of consideration holds things like texting under its umbrella, but it also includes things like failing to signal while turning, or leaving your shopping cart in the parking lot instead of walking it 30 feet to the cart corral.

I don't want to hear any b****ing about texting from people who don't bother to signal ("but nobody was around me!" or, "I was in the right hand turn lane, you knew I was turning right!"), or treat others the way you would prefer to be treated while driving.

"What's your blackberry address?!?!?!" <- you, joto :D

:( I agree, these things to "just look cool" but adding to the distractions are más putos.

Woah, now you're adding in variables that aren't necessarily inherent with simply talking on the phone. "Periodically grabbing other things [and grabbing] a pen to write down information" are things that are different from just talking on the phone. And actually dialing the phone is another factor that may not even enter the equation: what if you dial your phone before you start your ignition and begin driving? What if you use voice dialing? Or a hands-free device?

How is less of your concentration on the road solely because you are talking to a person on the other end of a receiver, as compared to talking to a person next to you?

    agreed.

I drove to OKC this weekend to watch Star Trek, and we repeatedly had to watch out for people swerving on the highway... sure enough, every time the person would be texting on their cell. It should be treated like a DUI.

This has been killing me lately with people that are in one of those lanes where you have the option of turning left or going straight. I'll be opposite of them and wanting to turn left, and they also end up turning left, but they don't have their turn signal on. So I end up sitting there waiting on them because I assume they are going to drive straight across.

I've also been known to walk a cart all the way back inside if there is no nearby corral or area off to the side to stash carts. I have discovered that my doing this is considered a rather strange practice.

I text while driving a fair amount. Only when I'm about to swerve off the road or potentially close the distance between me and the car in front, do I stop though.

I'm an excellent texter though, so it was definitely not me.
