I don't like a lot of rap. I hate **** like soulja boy and crap like that. he's a dime a dozen rapper. if not him, some other talentless hack would do it. i do like some rap.
I'm a big fan of Lupe Fiasco. He's not your typical "cars, guns, and hoes" rapper. The problem is that rappers like Cassidy will get more exposure because his songs are better club hits. <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/if3acI3cwi4&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/if3acI3cwi4&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object> NSFW <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/q1Et1siZhTk&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/q1Et1siZhTk&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
93.7% of all recorded music is total garbage. (paraphrasing a quotation from somewhere I can't remember- "The modern recording industry has convinced millions of people who don't like music that they actually like music... at least enough to buy it") That being said, most rap seems particularly inane, both lyrically and musically speaking. There's some that's interesting and creative, but not much. Most of it, like most music, is lowest common denominator stuff. The difference between rap and, say, radio rock is that rap appeals to people's stupidity to sell albums (the same as contemporary country), while radio rock (think Nickelback, John Mayer, etc.,) appeals because it has the flash of real rock n' roll (guitar solos, distorted choruses and what not) with none of the guts, you know, the dangerous and over-the-top type things. It's like rap tries to appeal by being offensive (either through its lyrics or through its utter idiocy, usually both) while radio rock tries to appeal by being completely mediocre and inoffensive. Contemporary country falls in the middle, by being both incredibly stupid yet, somehow, totally bland. (before anyone starts listing off the artists who don't fall into this categorical diss, let me point out that I am probably already aware of the very limited number of exceptions to my criticism)
I think the problem is that this is hardly the first rap song to be making money off of violence/death/abuse/drugs/crime/prison/etc. I understand why you feel it is particularly offensive, but I'd argue it hardly suprising.
Cassidy's one of the better rapper in terms of flow and lyrics on the fly. But he promotes absolutely NOTHING engaging about the human experience at all. Very limited subject matter. That's most battle rappers though, all they know is to "flow sick". Cassidy seem's like a flat out knucklehead altogether. I've known people in his mold, the guys who feel underestimated cuz they look "babyfaced" then devote all their being to thug-dom for the rugged image. He doesnt seem to know any other way and will probably be in jail again within 5 years... - - - - The little people who "stand for something" absolutely just LOOOOVE having hip hop around. They DON'T want it to go away even though they trash it, cuz it gives them something to speak out against. People for example were saying listen to "real" music not that lame-ass Air Supply/Rod Stewart crap ...but that got old and ineffective. When hip hop got more explicit and more exposure they JUMPED all OVER the chance to use that as the new comparative example. NOW U2's Joshua Tree can look like Beethoven's 5th compare to all that CUSSING and lack of creativity..... And some of these people are the white trashiest and brown and yellow trashiest of anybody
