Ah, I just realized it wasn't Intro to Philosophy, it was Philosophy of Arts or something. I can't take the regular philosophy class because it falls outside my requirement.

I think studying philosophy is essential to a classical humanities degree. Tell us why you're deciding whether to take a PHL class. Easy A? Interest in the subject?

If this is at UT, many people took Contemporary Moral Problems or something like that because it was rumored to be a blow off. The majority of kids were there to occupy a chair. There were nearly 250-300, mostly freshman, taking the course from various backgrounds. None of them struck me as philosophy majors which are a different breed of individuals. Along with astronomy, physics, and mathematics majors, they are irritating to hang around with lol.

Unless you actively engage in group discussions (when you meet besides group lectures) and do outside readings because of a passion for it, better to spend your tuition on something very different that will broaden your education like Art History, the Entertainment Industry of America (everything about radio/tv/film), or Developmental Psychology. More importantly, the classes won't be filled with unmotivated students like the lower division philosophy class above.

Read a philosophy book overview like ATW suggested. Then, actually read the source material of various thinkers yourself. It will be very taxing and hard to stay awake at times, but it's excellent brain food.

If it counts as an elective towards your degree, go for it. Philosophy was one of the few courses I actually enjoyed.

Yes it should, depending on your school and what other kind of requirements that you need to fulfill. There's also different sections of Sociology. If there's a course offer called Social Problems, I'd take that. It's kind of depressing but you can learn a lot.

Just use Ratemyprofessor and talk to any friends about the Professors. The Professors can make a world of difference.

If you go to UT, looks like you got a good selection of Undergrad courses as your selection. I'd also recommend Criminology, depending on the Professor of course.

Social Problems is offered as well, but looks like attendance is required for some assisgnments, so stay away if that's going to be an issue for you! lol

Talk to a academic counselor, if you can, to make sure it fits your requirements.

Is this even a question? Unless you're going to study it on your own, then definitely take the class. The concept is very boring to many people, and you may end up being one of those people, but the embedded ideas are very important to a whole lot of other things which will come up in a person's life.

Philosophy is for people that drink rare-non-craft beer at camp fires, smoke weed, wear cargo shorts, play board games, and like to talk a lot but do little. It was my least favorite class. I constantly tried to big-time the "prof" by belittling the subject matter in essays and wound up with a C, I took that C based on principle. I refused to back down to a bunch bicycle riding "adults" that still lived in mom's sun room in Bryan, TX.

Do yourself a favor and take a real class that actually matters.

Guess what, Descartes dream theory is bull**** because, derp, well, I ****ing know when I'm dreaming and I'm not ****ing dreaming. Go work at Valero you bozos.

I'm on cellphone so didn't read other replies

At my college we would often sign up for two extra classes and go the first week to see which prof we liked and drop the other one. Can't you do that?

Btw. Lols at philosophy being considered hard. At Rice, PHIL 101 was considered one of our rolls

Philosophy of Arts is not a philosophy class. It's a class about how to be a beatnick and noticed at your local coffee shop

I honestly don't know what to expect anymore. People are saying things that are so far in the extremes that I don't know what to go with.

If you are a math and science person, you might not do well in social sciences and humanities like philosophy. But for most people who are good at reading and English, then philosophy is one of the easiest classes you can take.

What I was saying is you have one extra class to pick that has nothing to do with your major. Right. I'm saying don't register just for that. Register for two. Go to both the first couple of classes and drop the one you don't like
