Excellent, excellent advice from DD. Clearly, you see the handwriting on the wall regarding your company's future, Codell, and major kudos for making such a success of it for so long, but don't wait to sell, IMO. Another major attack, by you know who, could also put the offer for your business in the toilet. The possibilities of something affecting the offer to buy your business are endless. Go for it. What DD said about negotiating a salary (with the company to remain nameless) is a part of normal business practice. I think they would be surprised if you took their opening offer. Be a gentleman about it, which you would be in any case, but be firm. That's my 2 cents, and good luck!
Lets just say hes way over agressive, and more importantly, just not so bright. Hes very gung ho about making his mark in the business and being established immediately, instead of taking the time that it takes to normally become establihsed. Essentially, he wants my company's name to work for him, instead of building his own company's name from the ground up. He's obviously not privy to some of the information that I have about the future of our sector of the industry.
Good luck codell. Sounds like one of those "good" problems to have. With the profit you will make selling your company, how many years would that make up for the salary decrease you'd be taking at the new job?
I haven't really been in that position before, but I hope that you get what you want and deserve. Best of luck.
Update is............... I tried to negotiate the salary, but they weren't very receptive ...they said theyll look into it, but they didnt think they would be able to meet my demands ....actually, the HR director seemed to be taken aback when I even approached the subject btw ...is 7-8% on a 401K good or not?
Matching? That's pretty good. Also, the HR person is not who you go through, unless they're directly responsible for hiring you.
It's a game. They deal with crap like that EVERY day. You in turn have to be just as confident. Do not hesitate because they will see it and call you on it because they will know that they have you. I love negotiating money on my contracts.
UPDATE: I've accepted both offers today. My new company and I were about $15,000 apart on yearly salary. I got them to come up $12,000. Im happy and sad at the same time. Quite frankly, this whole feeling sucks.
Nice negotiating. You can't be too upset with that. I'm sure it sucks to sell your baby though. Good luck in the future.
