The money that Mutombo is asking for is not a lot for what he brings to the team. Anyone with eyes can see that our second unit is HORRIBLE defensively. When Yao sits down, it's like the Red Sea has been parted while the other team performs dunking and layup drills. Mutombo would never allow the paint to be so unguarded. Not to mention that we get killed on the boards when Yao is not in the game, which leads to second chances by the other team.

The front office has to think about sitiuations like tonight when Yao may get into foul trouble, or God forbid, he gets hurt again, then what will we do? Right now Mutombo fits the bill for what we need with the money that we have. A little over is not a big deal with all of the money Les makes with his "superstar" Tmac and his cash cow in Yao Ming.

    Great back-up to have.

    But...

He isn't a player we should cry for though.

But it is sad that it ends this way. :(

It'd be sad if Deke went elsewhere, but I can't complain. Everytime Yao went down for a long period, Mutombo saved the team by playing at a high level and keeping the Rockets' playoff hopes alive. He's been an incredible bargain for us for four years.

I'm still holding out hope that Morey gets something done. If not, I hope he brings in someone even better ;).

i kept saying we should have signed him weeks ago. we could always make the moves to fall under the LT before the deadline.

Deke is valuable. We got into a 22 streak with him as mostly a starter last season. Most teams would love to have a 40+ Mutumbo as center...even as a starting center.

As much as I like Deke, I'd rather the team get a younger, more athletic center at least 6'10".

Me too. I like Mikki Moore as a backup center for the Rockets.

I sure am glad Les has all the worst case scenarios regarding Yao covered!

Dikembe may be shorter, slower but he still guards the paint just as well if not better then Yao does for the 15-20 minutes he can breathe. He was a huge part of our team , if it wasnt for him our streak died at 12-14.

You can blame SF3 for ripping Les off for $4 million over the past 2 years. If we weren't paying SF then we could have Deke.

How much time time did Mutumbo play when both Yao and he were healthy? Not much. He averaged about 8 minutes in 10 or so games when Yao was healthy.

It'd be nice to have him as a backup against the bigger teams, but he would barely see the floor if we signed him.

Moot point. Yao brings in enough money to cover the luxury tax of a whole team of Mutombos.

Can you give us an actual dollar number and a link to back that up?

Otherwise please stop using "Yao brings in a large dollar amount to Les that is unverifiable" excuse. He has a business to run and fiscal numbers to meet that you obviously do not know.

Hate to see him go. But he is not the "upgrade" to backup center the team needs. They need to pickup a long term solution, not the 1 year options on a 40+ old blocking center with zero offensive skills. What he brings on the defensive side is lost on the offensive side completely. He may stop a drive but he cannot make a layup or catch a pass.

The Rockets want a backup but a great one. I understand their stance for getting a balance backup instead of the defensive specialist. We have Chuck Hayes for that and he is actually real good on the defensive side. A little short but still good.

Now, can the Rockets get someone? Only via trade at this point.

Deke is as good as gone. Good luck but don't be counting on getting your ring if you are not with the Rocket this year ;)

Deke > Chuck on the offensive end. Did you watch last year games? Deke can actually dunk it. While Chuck struggles hitting wide open layups.
