See this closed minded approach of the religion is what turns people away from Islam.

First you have to study his life and understand the contextual/political history of why he did what he did when he did it. You don't have to apply that to your life verbatim. We should derive the peace and love he taught us and apply that to our lives. This is the way I practice my religion.

Hey, if that's what you believe, then by all means practice away!

But, after learning the actually historical Muhammad without the veneer of Islamic apologetics, it's really difficult for me to believe that man is worthy of being one of the most morally outstanding humans ever. However, a larger portion of my leaving of my faith had nothing to do with the moral judgement I had of Islam, but the lack of credible evidence for Islam or any religion for that matter.

The thing is... There are far better historical figures who were far more peaceful that we can emulate. I find no reason to follow him other than that I was born into the faith.

But that's besides the point. If I'm going to believe in something...

I kind of want to make sure there is credible evidence for it. I mean, that's what rational people do, right? Or am I missing something. The problem I have with Islam and why I left it wasn't as much to do with Muhammad's questionable morality, but the lack of evidence of his claims.

    For the past 6 years...

Oh, I understand. Because I defend Muslims as whole and am against Trump like anti-Muslim bigotry, I must be Muslim... right?

I got no problem with that. Why not follow all of them. You don't have to follow the religion to follow the positive aspects of Prophet Muhammed. He still preached a lot of good. For example people always talk about women's equality in Islam, but nobody ever mentions this hadith:

The Prophet (saws) said: Among the Muslims the most perfect, as regards his faith, is the one whose character is excellent, and the best among you are those who treat their wives well.

He would help his wife with cooking, cleaning and household chores. I practice this in my daily life. Happy wife = happy life

Except, some of Muhammad's rhetoric actually has negative tangible results to modern day Muslim women around the globe.

Like I stated before, if that is what how you practice, then cool beans. No one should have any gripes with you and trust me, I understand. My parents are still Muslim and when I hear the red faced taupe wielder **** out his mouth, it infuriates me. I can't with good conscience not defend the hundreds of Muslims I know who are good American citizens that are not deserving of the bigotry that is aimed towards them by a certain segment of the American population.

Just understand that I pose just as much criticism towards Judaism and Christianity.

I have a couple of friends with your exact mindset and totally get where your coming from. I always tell them that I can't argue with you on a point by point basis because for me its going to boil down to faith and nothing else. While they have taken faith completely out of the equation. It's actually refreshing to see people like you talk from a different point of view because it leads to a more understanding/optimistic approach of the world around you.

Off topic: I will say this, 70% of my social circle outside of work is with Muslims and till this day I have never encountered a muslim who spews violence and hate. Shoot if I even saw someone talking like that I would call them out in front of everyone. This is what really confuses me. All these acts are being carried out in the name of Islam, yet I have never met someone with even a tiny bit of inclination to lean that way. There is a lot of fear mongering going around in the media because the 100% of the muslims that I know are peaceful people who are just doing their normal thing just like every other American Citizen.

So one out of five, but what about anything else other than giving to charity?

Even peaceful symbolic religious practices can be viewed as a positive because it tends to promote an overall well being of the individual and community.

That's all fine, but what make you believe that make Islam stand out from other religion.

My inner faith. I don't think there is a point in me trying to say why my religion is better then another religion because it's like I have to put down another religion in order to show why I believe Islam is better.

One thing I do like is the daily practice of worshipping to god five times a day on a daily basis. I don't know any other religion that reminds you to worship God that frequently. Keeps me humble.

This thread went very well after sirbaihu left.

Pretty sure that is average age that is incredibly flawed because of infant and child mortality.

I don't care for religion at all, but my main problem with Islam today is the subjugation of women. There are many aspects of it that I don't care for but this is the one that I keep coming back to lately. For some reason we have become numb to this widespread practice. If Germany decided to change the laws so that women were treated in the fashion they are in many Islamic nations there would be massive protests and outrage.

Sorry I know we are supposed to be saying good things about Islam. I guess from my outsider perspective the positive things I saw with Islam were from when I read the autobiography of Malcolm X. When he discovered the brotherhood that existed within it and lack of racial bias.

    That's my little take.

Yeah, big success! 12/35 negative posts in the "beauty of Islam" thread. You think it's going well, do you?

Wow, I'm flattered that I've been compared to a religion, but let me assure you that I do not hold such sway.

Every religion is pretty good about promoting its positives and looking for converts. Christian and Buddhism teachings are fairly well-known. Taoism is arguably amoral. Hinduism is a total mystery to me. But nothing is as controversial as Islam, so I thought I'd ask. If I have offended by expressing curiosity to [your? don't want to assume] religion, I apologize. But you're right in that I am too lazy to learn more about it by reading the sacred book.
