great thread Smeg. Some of my thoughts include

Milli Vanilli
Vanilla Ice
Superchunk
Screaming Trees

Its hard to insult the former two by suggesting that there other albums weren't amazing, but they were just different. Maybe for a different reason, like w/ Polvo or Modest Mouse you're just blown away the first time around.

I was a big fan of Motorhead and UFO when they got together to form Fastway, it was a no-brainer for me..
I just wish they could have stayed together..:(

I almost got offended by the Night Ranger listing, but then I thought about it...their first album was without a doubt their best..even tho I still liked the other ones.. good call on that one..

I should also add Damn Yankees to the list. Their first album was an ass-kicker, and their second one a disappointment..

Awesome call, sub on Tricky.

Smeg,

I have to disagree with you on Coldplay. I feel that "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is twice the record that "Parachutes" was.

Let me see if I can think of anyone that has not been mentioned yet....

"Blank Generation" - Richard Hell & the Voidoids
"Marquee Moon" - Television
"The Stone Roses" - Stone Roses
"Core" - Stone Temple Pilots
"Exile in Guyville" - Liz Phair
"Entertainment" - Gang of Four
"Short Bus" - Filter
"The New York Dolls" - New York Dolls
"Endtroducing" - DJ Shadow

It wasn't EXACTLY their first release, but it was the first BIG one --

The Spin Doctors -- Pocket Full of Kryptonite

Have you listened to "Menace to Sobriety" ? I have always felt that was their best album, easily, and one of the more underrated albums I own. Lots of great rock tracks and a few that surprised me, showing the amazing range the band has if they try. Didn't sell too well, as I recall, which is a shame.

Don't waste your money on their last album (Motel California), though.

i know this is off topic, but at least its a mucic thread and it has something to deal with a band's first major label CD...

Manny--I know you used to be a Blink182 and say that "Dude Ranch" is the best of their last 3 cds, so I was wondering what the best songs from that CD were besides "dammit"

the big one to me is pearl jam because the first album is a classic and everything else is crap to somewhat decent.

i like coldplay's second album a whole lot more than their first and i love appetite for destruction but i listen to use your illusion 2 just as much.

Here's one that most of you probably won't remember, but it was (and still is) one of my all time favorite albums...Zebra - Zebra. They came out of Louisiana, and this first album had two songs that made the radio: Who's behind the Door and Tell me what you Want. But the whole album absolutely rocks! Give it a listen all the way thru sometime. However, they never matched the success of that first album, and went back into obscurity after that. They still tour and come thru Houston about once a year.

Other groups:

Planet P
Tony Carey (Lead singer for Planet P)
Iron Butterfly

Josie is really good, SCF, but I sorta like all those songs.

However, the first 8 to 9 tracks (been awhile since I have listened to that CD) are the best ones, I think.

I remember hearing a track or two of that album, it didn't dazzle me at the time, so I must admit I never gave the whole album a chance. With the ability to check out stuff thru mp3, I may give the rest of it a listen and see if maybe I may have been a little hasty.
I just checked a couple of reviews of it, and they both agree that Menace is UKJ's "real" metal release. Would you agree with that?

Yea, that was one choice I made that I felt was questionable.

I have "Purple" but I can't listen to it all the way through as much as I can with "Core".

Probably has to do with the fact, that I liked the grungey STP the best and "Core" has the best grunge.

FWIW, I love Core as well. Two great albums. I think I like "Purple" because it's more laid back and it also reminds me of one of my favorite summers ever...1994.

Chance's "Greatest Hit" cd. It's gonna be all downhill from there.

I cringe every time I read the spelling in the thread title. Good for you that you are not in that game.

I actually think This Desert Life is their best album. It certainly at least merits enough consideration that AAEA could not be called by far and away their best. Recovering the Satellites is probably their weakest, but any of their stuff is worth listening too. I ripped all of it onto an mp3 disk so I don't have to switch between their CDs in the car. :)

On the topic at hand, I would say the Beastie Boys - License to Ill was by far their best album, but I also think it is the best Rap album of all time.
