Why is this even a poll?

Angus Young was the best guitarist to ever grace the planet and our ears with his abilities.

BB owes Clapton a huge debt. That's why they became friends and will be while they are both on the planet. BB King was a forgotton son of the blues (along with all the other old timers) when the British guys started digging up every old American blues artists they could. Clapton becomes "God" in England and in an interview is asked who his major influences are. BB King is one of the names that comes out. Next thing you know BB King records are selling like crazy and BB is on his way to England where he can make some money from his music. It's actually not completely different than RUN DMC ressurecting Aerosmith.

For this I will always be greatful to Clapton and so will BB. As for BB being the greatest guitar player ever - this is where things break down. There is no "greatest guitar player ever". There is just music. The great thing about music is if you don't like what's on the radio you just hang out a bit and something that you like will come along. It might even be the greatest guitar player ever to you .

BB has the tone and more importantly his voice is freaking amazing. guitar is all in the fingers. Ask BB to play a few bar chords and he simply can't do it. It's not what he does.

I understand that Clapton influenced millions of musicians. I love some of his music. The important thing to remember is that he was a filter for other great guitar players which then came across as Clapton influencing those musicians. Stevie Ray is a prime example. If you listen to Albert Collins, Albert King and Freddie King you understand immediately where he got 95% of what he played.

Bottom line is that it is all subjective. You can view BB King as the greatest guitar player ever even though he can barely play a single chord. That's because the emotion of his music moved you regardless of the complexity. And that's what it is all supposed to be about. Which brings us back to Clapton. I fully understand why people enjoy his playing and his music regardless of the fact that technically he isn't as strong as legend would suggest.

There's room for it all and as long as it is honest music I usually enjoy it regardless of style.

    Best to ya',
    Brock

I spent a lot of summer nights at Allen's Landing in '67 and '68. One summer I did the light show at a dive across the street from Love Street. Can't count how many times I saw the Elevators there. The Movin' Sidewalks, Bubble Puppy, and many more. A cool scene for a while.
