I agree. I've been playing for over 20 years (as well as several other instruments to varying degrees). And I'm not trying to be a dick, but I'm a better guitar player than Eric Clapton. But then I know probably 30 or 40 people personally who are. There's always someone technically better (maybe no-one technically better than Pat Metheny).
might not be your taste in music - but very much worth a listen. This is one of my favorite pieces of music ever. The guitar outro is certainly worth the time. the poster disabled embedding so you will have to click on the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jip0fskuxQ <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tSONbye6n98&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tSONbye6n98&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
You can’t go wrong with anyone on that list. You can probably add Stevie Ray Vaughn, Carlos Santana, Leo Kottke and a few other guitarists. However, I would say that the best guitarists are the flamenco guitarists. The level of difficulty and the speed at which they play is unreal. This is why I think that Paco de Lucia is the best guitarist ever.
subjective but a few you forgot peter frampton, billy gibbons, carlos santana steve vai: awesome if i had to choose a favorite after jimi, i'd choose to jump off a cliff
Here's my favorite non-Clapton guitarist <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/yikAMr8p27Q&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/yikAMr8p27Q&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
I say this in every one of these threads, but I nominate Danny Gatton. Particularly the bit starting at 2:10 (or -4:05) blows my mind every time I see it: <object width="425" height="355"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MS5XH84mmI4&rel=1"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MS5XH84mmI4&rel=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="355"></embed></object>
Toby RAWKS dude! Seriously...no mas on the GREATEST whatever. The title of this thread should be Who is your Favorite Guitarist. That way anyone can post who their fave is, like I did with JLV. We could get a great spectrum of players, and some might even check out the music of a name that gets listed that they've never heard of.
And yet here you are posting on a message board to a bunch of anonymous people while Clapton has made over millions playing music. But yea, you are better than him, Brock - exaggerate much?
And for the record, I do not play the guitar. However, if I ever learned how to play it, I wouldn't be brazen enough to say I was better than someone who has made it their freaking life to play music, pretty much for over 40 years! I do agree with you that Metheny is a technical virtuoso.
Granted, that's still a bold statement about Clapton....but....I'm a hundred times the saxophone player Kenny G ever thought about being, so I can see his point, at least....meaning that there are plenty of great musicians out there that no one will ever hear anything about. And Nickelback still sucks, but they somehow make millions.
Yea, I got to thinking about Neil Young. There are probably many people here that post that are better guitar players than Neil Young. Hell, that's the whole reason he plays with Crazy Horse, so he can look a lot better than he really is. But he will be the first to tell you that he isn't all that great on the guitar. As for Clapton, well I used to think that he was overrated as all I knew about him was trite like "Tears in Heaven" or "Change the World", then I got into the Cream stuff and later Derek and the Dominoes plus the Bluesbreakers and then I could see where all these people were coming from. The thing about Clapton is he came at the right time in music - there was really no one else like him before he made his mark. Him being one of the first White blues guitarists to play definitely helped cement his reputation. And maybe he has phoned it in the last 25 years or so, but then I hear an album like "From the Cradle" and I know that this guy is really one of the best of all-time. And I don't doubt that Brock can play all of the famous Clapton solos whether it's "Sunshine of Your Love" or "Cocaine" (although I would like to see him play the solo to "White Room", wah-wah pedal in all). But if the two of them were on stage in a guitar duel, I would venture to say that Clapton would come up with some riffs and solos that Brock would be unable to play. Just a hunch on my part. And Nickelback?? Yea, I hear you on that too as that is a shame. But the thing with those guys is that even though they are making money and getting played on the radio now, not many people are going to be talking about them 20 years from now. People will still be talking about Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, etc 20 years from now.
i would rather listen to neil young play guitar than anyone listed in the poll. i also don't like rice in my burritos.
