Well, I just got the self-titled yesterday and I really like it on first listen. Much more straightforward rock than Drum's Not Dead and maybe even more than their previous albums, though it does wander a little over the course of the album (there's even a trip-hop song). Drum's not Dead is much more atmospheric and the heavy guitar riffs and banging drums are pretty much absent. It takes multiple listens to appreciate, and even after that there's still a few songs I couldn't quite get into. But still, I think their strongest individual songs are on this album. Definitely have to be in two completely different moods for these. I never got their second album, is it any good? They have a new one coming out early next year. Yeah, I read that before he produced them Dave Friedman played Wayne Coyne one of MGMT's self-recorded songs (probably "Time to Pretend"), and Wayne replied: "what do they need you for?" But yeah, he definitely put his stamp on the final recordings.
Bought a couple of albums this weekend: The Cajun Way : Doug Kershaw From Branch to Branch : Leon Redbone Me and Jerry : Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed Me and Chet : Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed (and only $10)
DC, I had heard that the Liars self-titled CD was probably their most accessible album. I am a little familiar with the stuff from "Drum's Not Dead" because they played a lot of that stuff live when they opened for Interpol at the Ryman in 2007. I am guessing that if any of their albums are alike, it would be the 2nd and 3rd as both of those albums have an emphasis on drums and there is not a lot of bass, at least that is the case with the 2nd album. If you have ever heard Public Image Limited's "Flowers of Romance", then you'll have a good idea of what "They Were Wrong, So We Drowned" sounds like. It is probably the most out there of their 4 albums but I think you would probably dig it as you seem to like challenging music like me. Cool story on Wayne Coyne and MGMT - have you listened to Embryonic enough to have a definitive opinion on it? Would like to hear what you think about it as I still need to pick that one up. And I'll say on "Oracular Spectacular", that the 1st 5 tracks are about as good as it gets on a CD. It lags on tracks 6-8 but gets better again with the last 2 songs. As of right now, I would have to give it a solid 4 stars out of 5 (maybe even a 4.5) which is very good for a debut CD.
Thanks mateo - you are really making me want to pick it up soon! Day 4 of Shoegazing/Dream Pop/Influences on Shoegazing: B.R.M.C. - Black Rebel Motorcycle Club Souvlaki - Slowdive Nowhere - Ride Citrus - Asobi Seksu Lazer Guided Melodies - Spiritualized Agaetis Byrjun - Sigur Ros I know a lot of people would probably disagree with me and say that Sigur Ros is more of a post-rock band and I could see their argument. However, the more I listen to them and listen to some of the other shoegazing bands, I am more convinced than ever that Sigur Ros fits more into a shoegazing category than a post-rock one, mainly because SR has vocals and a lot of post-rock bands do not plus the texture and wall of sound that Jonsi gets out of his guitar.
They are good, I own their stuff. But they are not the greatest. Most of their stuff sounds like Explosions in the Sky-lite. Not that there is anything wrong w/ that, i'm jus sayin'.
yea, but vocals is a rather loose term in regards to sigur ros. well, he's about the only dude I know that plays his guitar with a cello bow. but I agree that they vaugely fit the PR mold. I sure do like 'em though, thats for sure. have you given yourtenmofo a listen? <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WabkixhvkGU&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WabkixhvkGU&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object> <object width="320" height="265"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/lQlvZg2Sguw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/lQlvZg2Sguw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="320" height="265"></embed></object> they have that icelandic sigur-ros vibe and meaningless "lyrics". not quite on sigur ros' level but still pretty good.
Why am I liking this song so much? I didn't watch the video until last night But I've been obssessed witht the song for like 1 week now. I love the part where she howls!!! sexy... Shakira - She Wolf
yea, I just opened Field Studies split EP and started listening and got a little excited.....although EITS is a terrible comparison. They sound nothing like them. I think this is the interview where they said that EITS has never been an influence and they really don't even care for their sound. <object width="480" height="295"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WehnlGYx8ZQ&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WehnlGYx8ZQ&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="295"></embed></object> I'm not trying to sound smarmy, I'm just really curious...who would you consider the best PR band?
I think Manny just likes saying the word shoegaze. LL vs Manny is epic. Manny has the knowledge, but perhaps not the fundamental understanding of music since LL is in a rock band and plays the piccolo.
Thanks Landlord! You're right moe, I do like saying the word shoegaze. I am not in the same class with indie music like Landlord is. I am way on down there after him, Brightside, DCKid, Harrisment , etc.
Miracle Fortress - Five Roses Saw them (him) the other night and the performance was awesome. He did a bunch of new, unrecorded songs. I can't wait for the new record.
