I know they only released 3 albums (studio-wise) and that the debut, "The Comforts of Madness" is recommended more than "In Ribbons". What is your impression of that album? I am going to pick it up off Amazon sometime but it looks like I'll have to get the mp3 version as the physical copy of the album is out of print and people are asking outrageous prices for it.
its been years since i heard that one - i think the female singer was not in the band yet so the bassist/singer was doing all the vox. i remember it being quite different than in ribbons, which i still listen to regularly. definitely not as dreamy or ethereal sounding as in ribbons. some of that late 80's early 90's british dreampop/shoegaze stuff is hard to come by. until they started doing the slowdive reissues a few years ago their stuff was super expensive. chapterhouse is another band that could stand to get reissued. the only reason i even heard of pale saints is b/c they opened for ride when i saw them at numbers in summer 1992. i liked them better than ride live and i immediately went and bought in ribbons off that. then the bassist quit and their sound changed again i did take a ride poster off the wall in the lobby at #'s on the way out and i still have it. a bouncer came up to me and told me to stop and i pointed at another guy and said he told me i could - so when bouncer went over to talk to him i got out of the club safely, poster in hand. its like 3' x 3' - pretty cool!
Yes, yes, yes! Ride was very was such a good band. They never really got the recognition they deserved. 'Nowhere' is easily one of my favorite albums. Solid.
Get ANTHING you can find by the Pale Saints!! And Ride were great until going blank again, pop nonsense!!! Saw them 3 or 4 times "back in the day"! Twice w/the Pale Saints opening and twice w/Lush. Wish I could have seen them w/Slowdive, now that woulda been EPIC!!!
N'ah bro not after this week!! Seeing 2 Black Crowes shows and tonite the Allmans is making me feel rreeeeaalllll young! I will stay eternally 28! But yeah, those shows were a lifetime ago!!
best b-side ever? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/nGQq_U1L8Bo&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/nGQq_U1L8Bo&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
seeing MONO live was unimpressive. I understand part of their vibe is a humongous chamber orchestra, and that orchestra can't follow them everywhere....but their set was REALLY lacking that encompassing MONO feel. about half way through the set, during the last part of Follow The Map, they opened up and really started getting after it and redeemed themselves. I have come to the conclusion that they sound better on CD than they do live. Maybe I'd change my mind if I heard 'em play with their gigantic orcehstra. Maserati.....exact opposite. They had a tremendous vibe that I have never felt while listening to on CD. They were awesome. anyway.....a few pics... Spoiler
give these guys a listen.... Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles very GY!BE influenced. they also gave away a free copy of their demo , although I read that the sound quality(recording) isn't very good. I'm DL'ing it now....so I'll find out later. personally....I think they are pretty freakin good.
I'm digging really, really old school country - Bob Wills: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5sS5jSbV0Vg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5sS5jSbV0Vg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Patty Page: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Ek3eCbfqp0&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_Ek3eCbfqp0&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> "King of the Road": <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/9GOkc6aEfkM&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/9GOkc6aEfkM&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> and even a little "Red Headed Stranger", which isn't quite so old, but is an awesome example of the value of minimalism in a studio: <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/CJTsTwD587I&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/CJTsTwD587I&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> I'm not a redneck by any means, but every couple of years the old school country gets pulled out for a couple of weeks of heavy listening. It is a guilty pleasure. All you hipsters can scoff, but you don't know what you are missing.
Give a listen to this album - great tribute. The Pine Valley Cosmonauts Salute The Majesty of Bob Wills
Hey Landlord, You're quite the post-rock guru - any chance that GY!BE ever gets back together again to release a new album?
not a redneck by any stretch either...but Roy Buchanan is epic.... I've spent the past few days learning how to play this on guitar.... <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWHFEWGvlPE&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/gWHFEWGvlPE&hl=en&fs=1&color1=0x3a3a3a&color2=0x999999" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
the short answer is.... no. they won't. too many members with too many different and conflicting schedules. sucks. all we are left with is their influences. btw.....I just got back from The Mink. While there, I spent a good half hour with Maserati...talk about one cool band....we chatted about... upcoming album, touring with MONO...another tour stop in Houston, math-rock vs. post rock, the beauty and importance of crescendo, e-bows and the burden of having a fuched up german name... I luv me some Maserati. awesome band. me and Jerry Fuchs of Maserati... btw.... a very, very impressive postrock band from Houston... Golden Cities they were fantastic. lots of promise.
Nice. I agree. I know you're a drummer, so if you want to check out any of Mark Brzicki's drum "clinics" there are some on youtube. They were beyond a level that could really help me, but they were awesome to watch. This was also the album that really helped me appreciate the layered guitars recording technique. It's really cool how they fit so many simple but slightly different melodic guitar parts over each other in parts of their songs.
