I listened to My Morning Jacket - Evil Urges on the deck at the beachouse this weekend, and highly recommend it. It's about 40% pure country rock ala The Byrds or Poco but I also hear some Alan Parsons and Steve Miller in there plus a little bit of grunge tones. Quite varied. If you like it, you might reach way back to 1972 for Steve Miller's Anthology. It's strange to think that Steve already had an anthology album years before he hit the overplayed 80's classic Fly Like An Eagle, but he already had 7 country and blues rock albums before 1972. They are much simpler and organic sounding than the overdubbed pop that you know him for. http://cover6.cduniverse.com/MuzeAudioArt/120/125870.jpg
i'm not sure what to think of mmj's new one.... some very solid tunes scattered throughout, but i'll be damned if a handful of those tracks dont sound like 1979 kenny loggins yacht rock. they really branched out on this album, i'll give them credit for that. most of the songs are very good live, however.
Anyone download Nine Inch Nails' new album, The Slip? 10 tracks, which is short for NIN nowadays, but any new NIN is good NIN imo. I was a little surprised Trent had this out so fast after Ghosts. He's also coming back to the Toyota Center in August. I ordered tickets a few hours ago. Also finally got my hands on Portishead's Third album. I'm liking it a little more than I thought, but still not as much as the first two they put out over a decade ago.
I'm listening to the damn Wonder Pets sing about teamwork and ringing phones. My son is addicted to this show - I hear it alot these days...
Where did you get the MMJ cd? Is it out or did you dl it? I heard the new single my friend got from their mailing list.
You have my deepest sympathies... Great CD! I have to listen to that sometime soon as I recently added it to my iPod. Great stuff! As for me, I have listened to the following of late: "Natural History: The Very Best of Talk Talk" - Talk Talk "The Essential Bruce Springsteen" - Bruce Springsteen "Mark Hollis" - Mark Hollis "Another Green World" - Brian Eno "Poetic Champions Compose" - Van Morrison "This Year's Model" - Elvis Costello "The Cult" (Black Sheep Album) - The Cult "Common One" - Van Morrison "Collection" - Ultravox

Some of my friends sit around every evening And they worry about the times ahead But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference And the promise of an early death You either shut up or get cut up; They dont wanna hear about it. Its only inches on the reel-to-reel. And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools Tryin to anesthetize the way that you feel You have to love any rock song that uses "anesthetize" correctly.
prolly the most anticipated new releases that i've seen mentioned in this thread are by MMJ and wolf parade. evil urges is MMJ's "nashville skyline" to my ear, an album i like but one that is often ripped by hardcore dylan fans. at mount zoomer is less unhinged than "my apologies.." and i'm not sure that's a good thing. some people are bemoaning the state of the recording industry but i think both these albums are overproduced and success seems to have tempered their edge. in other words, keeping it small can sometimes mean keeping it real.
