Every Picture Tells a Story- Rod Stewart Never a Dull Moment- Rod Stewart The more I listen to these, the more I'm convinced that Every Picture Tells a Story is close to being a "top 10 all-time" recording and Never a Dull Moment is in the top 30. It's amazing how he went from being one of the best to an average popster.
bunch of cocteau twins stuff. weather appropriate music! treasure victorialand tiny dynamite echos in a shallow bay <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZWcgFUpypXg&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZWcgFUpypXg&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> ive been listening to this band for almost 20 years, but in the last couple they have crept into my all-time favorite bands list - definitely my favorite stuff out of the 'shoegazer' movement.
Rod Stewart chases money. He went from English Blues, to Disco, to 80s pop ballads, to churning out cheesy retro albums. For him, Rock is a way to make a fortune and bang a lot of chicks, and he's never seemed particularly ashamed of that.
HEALTH - Get Color You guys see that Thom Yorke has formed a new live band including Flea to perform his solo stuff? They're doing a couple of shows in LA next week. Sooo hoping they decide to make a full tour of it and come to these parts.
Well, post-1976, anyways. Every musician wants to make money. Some are simply willing to latch on to trends to do so. But very few touch his stuff from the early to mid-1970s- Gasoline Alley, EPTAS, Never a Dull Moment, A Night on the Town- particularly in the 2 I mentioned. Speaking of which, another gem I stumbled on that I hadn't heard in a very long time: Elvis Costello- Armed Forces Not one bad song in the bunch- actually, they're all terrific. I don't know- some say rock hit its peak in the 60s and early to mid 70s, but there are some exceptional albums that came out in the late 70s: Van Halen I The Pretenders Cheap Trick Armed Forces Parallel Lines Controversy- Prince London Calling Who Are You The Wall Very good stuff indeed.
A couple of GLARING omissions: Outlandos d'Amour (1978) Reggatta de Blanc (1979) Shame on you, dandorotik. I know you're better than that. Shame on you.
Well, the list wasn't meant to be comprehensive- there are probably 50-60 others that can go on that list. But, truth be told, I like those other albums better than the Police's. I never found The Police to be as compelling as Van Halen, Cheap Trick, and The Pretenders, anyway. I like Zenyatta Mondatta the best, probably. But I've always found that The Clash did reggae better than the Police, and among their great songs, they've put some clunkers or so-so songs on some of their CDs (like "Mother" from Synchronicity- what the hell was up with that?). But that's just my POV. Lot of people can't stand Cheap Trick, The Pretenders, The Who- and that's cool. I mean, heck, my favorite artist is Bruce Springsteen, and you know he has a LOT of haters out there- and I can see why, kinda. But The Police never did it for me like other bands- and that was one of the 1st concerts I saw- November 16, 1983 at The Summit. Maybe I need to relisten to their stuff- I'll pull out those 2 CDs later. In the meantime, I'm still on the Elvis Costello kick: My Aim is True This Year's Model Armed Forces Armed Forces is, to me, one of the best CDs of all time. And I know THAT will definitely be disagreed upon by many.
LOL, well Sting liked to put one or two songs written by Andy or Stewart on each album. Partly so they would quit bugging him about it and partly so they would make his songs sound better in contrast. Which they did... Anyway, I was just messing with you if you couldn't tell. To each his own. Music is subjective and people can like any band they want (unless we're talking about Creed or Nickleback or Daughtry etc.). Thanks to the Hip-Hop thread, I'm currently listening to: It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back - Public Enemy
