I actually like the length because everything now is sort of designed for binge culture. So you release stuff in chunks and build intrigue in between. I think Beach House put like 2 weeks in between side releases or “chapters.” Honestly there’s still stuff on the new album I haven’t really even given a deep listen to. I think that’s a good thing. I remember Radioheads Hail to the Thief was kinda like that for me where it was a huge chunk of music where I could come back to for years and discover new stuff. I don’t think the standard 12 track 45 minute record works anymore honestly as a sit down and listen front to back. People get too distracted and start getting on their phones.
And that's not always a bad thing. I think a band just shouldn't always do double albums. I kind of liken this to the Cure's Kiss Me Kiss Me album where there's a library of music to come back to and find new stuff in for years. But you still need your more focused efforts to really grab attention in this new world of streaming in chunks. An album like Kiss Me only if introduced today would only get a following because of more focused efforts like Disintegration.
I was familiar already with Fontaines D. C. And am definitely a fan. Thanks for the recommendations. I'm going to check out the other ones.
