Gonna have to agree with you SWTsig, Because of the Times was an amazing album compared to the new one...
Gomez Biography by Greg Prato The British band Gomez is a five-piece act consisting of Ben Ottewell (vocals, guitar), Tom Gray (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Paul Blackburn (bass, guitar), Olly Peacock (drums), and Ian Ball (vocals, guitar, harmonica). Emerging during a time in which the majority of up-and-coming British bands were either retro-pop (à la Oasis), trip-hop (Portishead), or space rock (the Verve, Radiohead), Gomez was one of the few to contain bluesy elements in their rock. Their debut for Virgin Records, Bring It On, received praise from rock critics on both sides of the Atlantic. Gomez also received the distinguished Mercury Music Prize for 1998 Album of the Year in England, where they edged out such stiff competition as Massive Attack's Mezzanine and the Verve's Urban Hymns. They completed their inaugural U.S. tour opening for Eagle-Eye Cherry in October 1998, while the press still offered praise -- Spin magazine called Bring It On "a damn beautiful album," giving it an eight-out-of-ten rating. Liquid Skin followed in 1999 and the rarities and B-sides compilation Abandoned Shopping Trolley Hotline was issued a year later. A third studio album, In Our Gun, appeared in spring 2002. Another hiatus saw Ian Ball relocating to Los Angeles, while still working with the band at their new studio in Portslade, England. The dozens of tracks recorded during this time were whittled down and fashioned into Split the Difference, released in May of 2004. By that time, Hut, their original label, had gone under, leaving them signed to Virgin (Hut's distributor). Despite all the critical acclaim, sales were never up to what Virgin was expecting from Gomez, and the two sides parted ways later that year. In 2005, they signed with ATO Records and released Out West, Gomez's first live album, in June of that year. How We Operate arrived in May 2006, and the band rounded out the year by assembling a retrospective collection of singles, rarities, and unreleased tracks for Five Men in a Hut: Singles 1998-2004. I actually saw them at Bonnaroo this past June. Other than the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, they were the band I was most impressed with (and this also included Animal Collective and TV on the Radio) when I was working that Friday. I wouldn't mind getting some of their stuff; however, there is way too much other music out there that I need (Captain Beefheart, Zappa, Allman Brothers, Wilco's new album, Tom Waits, Liars, etc.). Maybe some day, I will get something of theirs but I would guess it is going to be a long time. Yet, I did think they are a band worth exploring. Oh and I hear ya, Dubious, on allmusic as it is a site I probably read 15 to 20 times a day. Yet, I learn just as much, believe it or not, about music from this site as I do with allmusic. Sometimes the best way to learn about new artists is to ask people that are fans of that artist. This site has personally gotten me into Roxy Music, Van Morrison, Supertramp, Queen, Genesis, The Flaming Lips, The Band, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Byrds just to name a few.
And speaking of Supertramp, I fired up their 2 very best albums: Crime of the Century Breakfast in America
I'm hooked on this for the past few weeks: One of the best thrash metal albums made (It's there with Testament's Legacy, Metallica's ...And Justice For All, Slayer's Reign In Blood...)
Sheer Heart Attack - Queen (first Queen I have listened to in EONS) Bad Company - Bad Company I also put together on the iPod a playlist that I called the "Lost Supertramp" album. It is basically 3 tracks from Roger Hodgson's solo debut, "In the Eye of the Storm" and 3 tracks from the first post Hodgson Supertramp album, "Brother Where You Bound". 6 songs total that last about 50 minutes plus including "Had a Dream", "Cannonball", "Brother Where You Bound" (which features David Gilmour on guitar solo!), and "All Because of You". It works out pretty well and would be Supertramp's 3rd best album after Breakfast and Crime.
OK, another question- I know, I'm gonna get cyber-smacked for asking this dumb question, but someone tell me about Tool- I know I can look them up, but basically wanted to know what you thought of them and a recommended CD. I know they have a great reputation but I quite honestly haven't had much of an opportunity to listen to them. Are they similar to Metallica or someone like that? Thanks!!
Been in a major electronic (trance, house, techno) mood lately... <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/2WPCLda_erI&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/2WPCLda_erI&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tA48ZB1YmuE&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tA48ZB1YmuE&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/VCbO-3hjPok&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/VCbO-3hjPok&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <br> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZR035Mhd58o&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZR035Mhd58o&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
completely agree, there first album is a classic, one of my favourite of all time, the fascination with bands to embrace so called Stadium Rock is flat stupid, driven by money and produces crappy music
And a fine morning it is! Think I'll start with: Mike Oldfield: The Songs of Distant Earth Philip Glass: Songs From the Trilogy and end with: Kitaro: Heaven and Earth
Reliving my college years this morning: Vivid - Living Colour Time's Up - Living Colour Truth and Soul - Fishbone The Reality of My Surroundings - Fishbone The Big One is Coming - Ten Hands Kung Fu is What I Like - Ten Hands
Currently listening to Fabolous-Loso's Way. No auto-tune nonsense plus with good lyrical content which is nonexistent nowadays in mainstream hip-hop.
The Dreaming - Etched in Blood. Damn good goth rock, featuring the lead singer from Stabbing Westward.
Tool is hard for me to describe. I read that they are a cross between Pink Floyd and a heavy metal band like Judas Priest. They have often been called a "progressive metal" band. Their lead singer, Maynard James Keenan has often said that King Crimson was one of their biggest influences and that they have ripped them off. So that might dissuade you from listening but I implore you to give them a chance. I have all their studio stuff but the ones I find myself going to over and over are "Undertow" and "Aenima". The first one is more metal and features great songs like "Sober" and "Prison Sex". The second is definitely more proggish and includes one of the greatest opening tracks on an album period in "Stinkfist" aka "Track No. 1" (according to MTV, lol). Great band and definitely worth getting into.
