I've been on a George Benson kick this weekend. He's one of the most (I think) underappreciated guitar players and vocalists. Just crazy good. This live version of "On Broadway" has everything, including a nice drum solo for @ima_drummer2k.
Absolutely agree. As a vocalist he definitely deserves far more appreciation than he's received. And I think his commercial success has somewhat overshadowed his past reputation as one of the greatest jazz guitarists.
I want to get through an Iron Maiden and a Judas Priest album tomorrow plus 2 various indie albums and then I may do a "6 pack". I listen to a random artist and go through 6 of their albums. The jo mama thread of Pearl Jam vs Stone Temple Pilots has me thinking - you can tell a lot about a band and their evolution as you go through their catalog. Sometimes it is good (like Radiohead and Animal Collective and Queen for example) or it can be consistent (like Slayer and Iron Maiden) or it gets bad like Metallica. I don't know - I may just do 4 as 6 is a lot.
Nice, yeah I've had RJD2 in the playlist for a minute. After finding the Mad Men theme track I discovered he had many other solid instrumentals in his catalogue, good find.
And in a completely unsurprising twist, the new Spoon album is good. One of the longest lasting and most consistent indie rock bands of all time. And inductees to the Texas Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (if it existed).
The whole album is great, kind of echoing John Zorn's Nake City, both cinematic in some of the most quirkiest ways. The funky 70s meets millennium, and the post-war cold-war 50s & 60s meet no wave. Went walking around the Georgetown, Texas downtown square a couple of weeks ago and this young woman street performer was playing a nice version of George Benson's "Breezing." She was surprised I recognized it, while I was surprised she knew it, since she couldn't have been more than mid-twenties. I tipped her and shared my box of Girl Scout cookies with her.
Avey Tare - Down There Panda Bear - Tomboy To me, these 2 albums are the best of the solo works done by members of Animal Collective. I know some people are going to disagree with me on Panda Bear and say that "Person Pitch" is the better album and it is really strong but honestly, almost all of Panda's albums, IMO, have been very good and consistent. Avey, on the other hand, his stuff is just a big mess sometimes. However, Down There is very compact and a very focused album and that is why it is his best album.
I am trying out my four pack of albums by various artists - right now, I am halfway through the Faith No More 4 pack Faith No More - The Real Thing Faith No More - Angel Dust Angel Dust is one of the greatest and most overlooked albums out there - an absolute masterpiece.
Chicago with 25 or 6 to 4 - Terry Kath uncorks a wild guitar solo. Always great live! Same venue, a month later. Santana doing Soul Sacrifice with the original lineup. Wow! Santana, 22 years later. Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen/Oye Como Va
