So is my first Gabriel album (was an impulse buy at Half Price), but now I'm going to scour the other HP locations to get all of the others!
Alice is a badass. His band is more underrated than Cheap Trick IMO. Love it To Death/Killer/School's Out/Billion Dollar Babies/Welcome to My Nightmare is an incredible run. Really unheralded rock bands: Alice Cooper Thin Lizzy Cheap Trick King's X The Wildhearts Mott the Hoople Enuff Z Nuff (seriously)
OK, just got back from the Def Leppard-Poison-Cheap Trick concert. Yes, this belongs in this thread because, for this evening, this is the music I was listening to. First, Cheap Trick came on right at 7 PM. Before that, they had the montage thing- it was only audio. Here's what I remember- the first thing you hear is someone speaking in Japanese really really fast, so it sounded like a promo for Budokan. Then, you hear Homer Simpson say, "I prefer Cheap Trick." Then, the audio from Fast Times, "What about the tunes? I want you to want me- the dream police da da da da da da da, your mommy's alright.." then they had Abu from The Simpsons singing Dream Police, then they played the beginning of Stop This Game- and there were a few other things they had. Playlist: Way of the World I Want You to Want Me These Days Taxman, Mr. Thief Tonight It's You Sick Man of Europe Dream Police The Flame Surrender Tonight It's You might have been 4th, though. The surprise was Taxman. Anyway, "Way of the World" was great. Robin does the "I...WANT...YOU...TO...WANT...ME" scream before IWYTWM. Sounds great. These Days sounded tight- they ended it just slightly different than the record- I think just a short, 30-second extra musical part. Tonight It's You sounded note-for-note awesome- the people I was with knew and loved that song. Let me tell you, "Taxman, Mr. Thief" was ab-so-freakin-lutely perfect. I swear, it sounded like 1977 all over again. I was so utterly impressed with how good that sounded. Sick Man of Europe was very good- I think he sings just a bit lower live on that song, but not much at all. Dream Police was very good- a lot of people knew that in the lawn area- this one guy was really going crazy on that one, saying, "That's my favorite f**kin song of all time!!" Everyone in my area liked that. And for the next one, The Flame- wow, excellent version and a great crowd reaction- when Robin hit the note and carried it at the end, my friend looked at me and said, "Damn, that guy can sing!" Then on to Surrender. The only song that sounded like it was a bit rushed or the sound was off or something. Of course, a lot of people went nuts for that. OK, in-concert banter. Rick Nielsen says after SMOE, "We're going to be on Conan O'Brien on Sept. 1, so if you watch, I promise I'll wave at you." He introduces the keyboard player Magic Christian as "he's just out of rehab.. so please don't offer him drugs or alcohol...either both or nothing..." or something like that. By that time, the $12 margarita I just finished started hitting me a bit (don't worry, that was my last drink of the evening- I had my 14 year-old with me). He said a few more things- a nice comment about Def Lep and Poison, thanked the fans- threw out 100s of picks (I was in the lawn so I didn't catch any- but after the concert, as me and my son were walking out, some lady gave my son a Cheap Trick pick. Oh, and he threw the Kiss record (or album cover) really, really far- it went all the way in the back of the seated area. Now, for Poison. On just the show aspect alone, an outside observer could actually say their show was better than CT's. But here's why- they're shameless. Bret Michaels mentioned "Houston, TX" at least 20 times, they had the flame shooters in the back, they gave the shout out to the armed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan before "Something to Believe In"- they had the guitar and drum solos, which weren't bad. And they really, really got the crowd into it. But, and please understand that I'm not trying to sound elitist or snobby or anything, but there are a LOT of people that go to concerts that dig that stuff and don't realize they're being pandered to. When I was 16, I saw Loverboy in concert at The Summit and Mike Reno said after the 3rd song, "Houston is the rock and roll capital of the world!!" So, of course the crowd goes crazy, but I knew even back then that he was kissing the audience's you-know-what. So the Poison concert was basically a cliched suck-up- but you know what, people loved it- loved the drum solo, loved the Armed Forces shout outs- and to be honest, I believe they were sincere about that. So, Poison, for what it's worth, put on a good show. I was impressed with their showmanship. And Bret Michaels is a master at working an audience. So props to them. Then, Def Leppard. The most expensive production by far among all 3. Big video screen, best light show, loudest sound. Def Leppard played their hits. Def Leppard got the crowd into it, particulary on Pour Some Sugar on Me, Foolin, Rock of Ages, and Armageddon It. Phil Collen played great- he had a camera on the end of his guitar so you could see up close his fingers on the guitar. He played great. Rick Allen did well, too. But here's the thing- I felt kinda bad for Joe Elliott. That guy has lost some of his voice. He had to sing the high parts of Photograph, Bringing on the Heartbreak, just barely above a whisper. He just cannot scream those parts like he used to, and it was obvious. I mean, he tried, and he did fine with everything that didn't require high-pitched singing like Animal and Hysteria. But he just can't sing those anymore. I mean, it was very obvious unless you were drunk (which many people around me were at the time But, aside from that, Def Leppard put on a terrific show- I mean, really, that's who most people were there to see, and they didn't disappoint. There was a lot of people on the lawn by the time CT came on, and people really seemed to enjoy them from where I was sitting. My sister summed it up best, "I liked listening to Cheap Trick because they sounded the best, I liked watching Poison, and Def Lep is one of my all-time favorites, so I'm biased about them." Overall, a terrific show. Of course, it's painfully obvious I'm biased on CT, but it really was 3 good all-around performances. DD says, Good...Night!

dando, Great review - glad to see you had a great time. Yea, I would imagine that Joe Elliott's voice is about gone. I had always heard that *supposedly* Mutt Lange helped his voice sound even better in the studio, thus the reason why they always wanted to work with him as their producer. Aerosmith (The Geffen Years) aka the sober years Done With Mirrors Permanent Vacation Pump Get A Grip By the way, anyone else seen Steven Tyler recently. All reports seem to indicate he's been back on drugs for the last few years and is spiraling out of control. He hasn't even picked up the phone to talk with any bandmates since his fall. Pictures of Tyler at the liquor store don't help his case.
