Rick James - Fire It Up Massacre - Lonely Heart Massacre isn't really jazz more like avant-garde but another great group featuring Bill Laswell with the sonic pyrotechnics of the insanely talented Fred Frith and This Heat's drummer (after their debut) in Charles Hayward.
i know its only june, but thats the album of the year for me. the are so freaking good and unique. they took what they did on their first album and got weirder and more out there, but at the same time more musical and accessible. ive never heard anything like this band before...just when you think we have heard all there is to be heard from a guitar-bass-drums combo these kids come along and blow my mind! if you dont know this band think zappa, 70's miles, mars volta, captain beefheart, sonic youth, danny elfman, looney tunes music all mixed together. they also released an EP of covers "nothing compares to you" into "lets go crazy" psycho killer 21st century schizoid man moonlight on vermont - singer does a real good captain beefheart impression https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy8HPyE4iCo
I started paying attention to them because of their sounds in the vein of Can and The Fall when they're working with Damo Suzuki, and then noticed that their initial album sounded more diverse and fun. (https://bbs.clutchfans.net/threads/music-what-are-you-listening-to.130363/page-588#post-12689916) Feels like witnessing some organic AI (oxymoron?) that's been eating up the history of 20th c western music and just decided to start letting out what they've sponged up in the most adventurous and audacious ways. Certainly one of the most enjoyable bands. And they're still in the early stages in their career!
