^ Rashmon - what are your thoughts on Joe's Garage? I know that you know Zappa better than anyone here and I really thought about getting Joe's Garage - but it being 3 discs sorta scared me off so I went with Shut Up... instead. Any thoughts you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, but when it comes to Zappa, I'm not impartial, I love everything he did. Joe's Garage is a great album where he built new songs off of his favorite guitar solos (xenochrony). Lots of great guitar stuff. some of it buried. Great story and there is Watermelon in Easter Hay and... I found him to be hilarious and one of the best satirists of his day. EDIT: you have to listen to it straight through for the full bliss
Public Image Ltd - The Flowers of Romance Pere Ubu - Dub Housing I love PiL but their first 3 albums are so great. The Flowers of Romance, I think, was the height of their prowess as an experimental rock band - too bad that they never reached heights like that ever again.
So I am running my experimental artists/favs and the order I am going in (in case you didn't notice): Frank Zappa Captain Beefheart The Residents Sun City Girls Sun Ra Lee "Scratch" Perry Can/Holger Czukay Tom Waits Public Image Ltd/John Lydon Pere Ubu/Dave Thomas Ornette Coleman John Zorn Gong (all versions) Soft Machine/Robert Wyatt Scott Walker Henry Cow/Slapp Happy/Art Bears
Part 2: Boredoms/Boris/OOIOO Animal Collective/Panda Bear/Avey Tare PJ Harvey Bjork Radiohead/Thom Yorke/Atoms for Peace Oneohtrix Point Never/Boards of Canada/Aphex Twin/Four Tet/Autechre Sigur Ros/Jonsi Yo La Tengo/Dinosaur Jr./Sebadoh Nick Cave/Birthday Party/Boys Next Door Liars Swans Sparks/FFS Random Post-Punk Random Post-Punk Revival Random Punk Random Emo
Public Image Ltd. Who knew that awesomeness would drop from the Sex Pistols??? Remember seeing this on MTV waaaaay back then...and thought it was awesome as heck...
Gojira's new album Fortitude. It is A++. I did not like their previous album (Magma) and was worried that their style change was a dropoff in quality. But I was wrong. This is the best new album I've heard since 2019 (Empath, by Devin Townsend). I don't even have a specific song to share because I love almost all of them (but I'll share one anyway b****es). This is Gojira at their best: heavy, complex, fun. 10/10 would get COVID to attend a show.
