First one is my old drummer's band. The rest are other bands that recorded in the same studio I did that I like and listen to. A-WA is a bit after my time but Riff Cohen I saw a few times live. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DO4mvZhPpPs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/g3bjZlmsb4A" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/10M0xw3UgCo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Gojira - Magma Sad&Disappointed / 10 It's streaming for free now on YouTube but I can't really recommend it. When they released a song a couple weeks ago I got very worried. Had no idea what to expect, then was horrified to hear: meh guitar work, mediocre drums, a chorus (FFS!), and... God have mercy... harmonizing, auto-tuned, clean vocals at the end of the song. Basically, it had the format of every "rock" song you hear on the radio. It was nothing special, and the opposite of what Gojira has always done. Then I read an interview with Joe Duplantier about this album and he was talking about how he admires singers and singing, and how he's always wanted to do that. OK, fair enough. What's wrong with that, you ask? Well, Joe, you can't sing. You're not good at it; you're very, very bad, which is why you have to have your vocals totally reworked by a soundboard so as to be somewhat tolerable. If this came up in one or two songs on an album? OK, fine, no prob. But it's in all but one or two songs on the album, and that's not OK. Plus, in the interview he talked about shortening songs because he thinks that's what "people want nowadays" (paraphrasing). WTF, Joe? Who gives a s*** about what people want? Make good metal, as you have for 20 years, and people will flock to it. Here's to hoping this is just a one album thing and not the band they're trying to become. There's still some greatness on the album ("The Cell") but this is easily my least favorite Gojira album.
