I could never get into Swans because of that singer. IDK if I am missing something or just don't get it....but his voice is extremely off putting. Eluvium might be something you like. It's fairly similar with less pungent vox. Eluvium is a good gateway to drone/ambient drone.
Out of the 24 or so tracks on that album, I would guess about half have no vocals at all. Some of them even have taped spoken word vocals which is similar to the GY!BE stuff on Lift Your Fists... I'll have to re-listen to it again at a later date and send to you the best instrumental track - no vocals, I promise.
yea the instrumental tracks are crazy good. I really like them...but as soon as he starts singing....shreeeek! Swans has some beautiful textures. but again....the vocals just ruin it for me. GY!BE is kind of a stretch comparison as Swans is more ambient/drone. Hotel Hotel, Andrew Weathers and Endote are more similar. Although, those 3 are REALLY drone. I'm gonna listen to Swans again and see if something clicks this time. I have been listening to Hotel Hotel and Grouper all day anyway. Totally, totally terrific band- only put out 3 albums, but all were outstanding: "Mr. Soul," "Broken Arrow," "I Am A Child," "Go and Say Goodbye," "For What It's Worth,"- some of the best stuff of the 60s.
