My all time favorite industrial act is easily Skinny Puppy. I've said it before I believe in this thread, but check out Mythmaker the last release by puppy. Give it a few listens, the sound design is incredible it is a bit of a departure from their earlier work. I like Frontline quite a bit but they didn't have the consistency with some of their releases. Still, put them way up there. Leeb was actually a part of early puppy. The dreaded NIN and Manson question. Trent worked with Uncle Al quite a bit early in his career. No denying his early stuff was more "industrial" mainstream or not, The Downward Spiral is a great album IMO. More on Trent, he was actually inspired by Puppy with the song "Down in it", taking the idea from The Puppy song "Dig it" Manson is even more touchy. His first record was probably his most original, but I think he had an agenda from the jump. To me, "Antichrist" was brilliant but had Trent written all over it and he took very little credit. I liked Manson's first 3LP's and the Smells like Children EP, not so much after. Nothing original, every idea was borrowed. I'll have to think about my top artists and albums. Most of the bands we've discussed hate the label Industrial, but it is what it is. More of a true Industrial act would have to be Einsturzende Neubauten, semantics really.
I agree on MM. You listen to so much of their work and there are blatant ripoffs. Like I said he had an agenda, he marketed himself well after riding coattails. That MDFMK record was awesome! Some of the bands better work IMO after En Esch left. KMFDM had some decent releases mid way through their career but it's all pretty stale really. Nothing new same old "KMFDM doin it again" garbage
It would be hard for me to rank industrial groups as I would probably include some proto-Industrial groups like Big Black, Public Image Ltd., and Killing Joke (and believe me - all 3 of these groups were essential to Industrial). Hell, I might even throw in some Swans, too. But pure industrial? Gotta go with Front Line Assembly followed by Ministry and then KMFDM. I love NIN but he lost me with The Fragile and everything that came after it. And I do like the Manson stuff through Mechanical Animals but don't really care for anything else there. Nitzer Ebb and EN are cool as is Front 242 but I actually find myself wanting to listen to 20 Jazz Funk Greats by Throbbing Gristle (another precursor) before anything by Nitzer Ebb, EN, and Front 242. Skinny Puppy was a band that had a couple of albums by but I couldn't get into them like I could FLA, KMFDM, Ministry, etc. Guess I need to give them another try. What do you guys think about VNV Nation?
James Brown and the Famous Flames - Try Me. "I wont plead no more" is my favorite James song, he just yells at that girl "DONT GO!" I feel you James
Manny, Throbbing Gristle yes, Killing Joke yes. PIL I would say doesn't belong in the conversation, I love PIL but wouldn't put them close to this genre. KMFDM lost me after Money, pretty much the same regurgitated material. Lyrically they are awful but they are a well oiled machine when it comes to putting out albums. VNV Nation is kind of meh for me. There is a song or three I don't mind hearing now and again but that's about it. To be honest I don't like most of the stuff on Metropolis records. I appreciate the avenue but most of the music is so so IMO. Of you're not familiar with Coil, give them a listen.
ive jammed w/ luther (bassist) a few times - cool dude. havent seen eagle claw yet, but they kick ass on that video.
I like your style. I saw Eagle Claw and Omotai in Houston back in Sept. They were awesome. They play a lot with White Rhino too. Another bad ass group.
