I would not consider The Sword 'Doom' (although they are badass) but if you wanna check out a few(active) Houston bands in the similar vein as The Sword, check out Omotai and Black Congress. They dont have youtube videos worth a shti but here are some links... http://blackcongress.bandcamp.com/ http://www.myspace.com/omotai Omotai is lined up for some SXSW gigs, and I have Black Congress down for a few shows in Houston in the near future. Black Congress is my favorite group going in Houston along with Co-Pilot. If you liked nu-metal(Rage Against The Machine, Deftones)......you will really appreciate Black Congress.

yes - but not the laid back surfer-acoustic rocker...the boxer. miles was a huge boxing fan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Johnson_(boxer) i think its safe to say that miles would not dig jack johnson the surfer acoustic-rocker. and he definitely didnt dig steve miller...
Hip-Hop fans, check out the album "Tobacco Road" by Seattle duo Common Market. I got it on Amazon with their mp3 downloader and was pleasantly surprised. Production is great, lyrics are a little wacky, but it's overall a very smooth listen.
what jo, your classic post-rock nemesis, said. Silly Landlord - Miles died in '91 so it is NOT possible for him to do a tribute to the Jack Johnson that sings in music these days. That album by Miles that I listened to was from 1970 and was his contribution to a short film on Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight boxing champion. It is a landmark of classic fusion jazz. Features John McLaughlin, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, an uncredited Sonny Sharrock and many others..
New ones I have picked up recently and like: Dr. Dog - Shame, Shame Ty Segall - Melted I've also been slowly downloading Spoon's entire back catalog. I am amazed how one band can make such consistently good music over a period of 15+ years without getting stale. Very impressive.

The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet The more I listen to this, the more I'm convinced it's the best thing they've ever done and one of the best-ever rock albums. Most say Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main Street, or even Some Girls. I have to go with this one. Clearly now in my top 10 all time.
Scientist - Heavyweight Dub Champion Anthrax - Among the Living Magic Sam - West Side Soul John Coltrane - My Favorite Things
I read the lyrics for Sympathy for the Devil and it may be one of the most impressive inclusions of historical references in any song ever: Please allow me to introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste I've been around for a long, long year Stole many a man's soul and faith And I was 'round when Jesus Christ Had his moment of doubt and pain Made damn sure that Pilate Washed his hands and sealed his fate Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game I stuck around St. Petersburg When I saw it was a time for a change Killed the Czar and his ministers Anastasia screamed in vain I rode a tank Held a general's rank When the Blitzkrieg raged And the bodies stank Pleased to meet you Hope you guess my name, oh yeah Ah, what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game, oh yeah I watched with glee While your kings and queens Fought for ten decades For the gods they made I shouted out, "Who killed the Kennedys?" When after all It was you and me Let me please introduce myself I'm a man of wealth and taste And I laid traps for troubadours Who get killed before they reached Bombay Pleased to meet you Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah But what's puzzling you Is the nature of my game, oh yeah, get down, baby Pleased to meet you Hope you guessed my name, oh yeah But what's confusing you Is just the nature of my game Just as every cop is a criminal And all the sinners saints As heads is tails Just call me Lucifer 'Cause I'm in need of some restraint So if you meet me Have some courtesy Have some sympathy, have some taste Use all your well-learned politesse Or I'll lay your soul to waste, mmm yeah
Front Line Assembly - Milennium Not their best but still really good, IMO, especially if you love heavy guitar. Was going to try to listen to some Rammstein but I think I am going to call it a night.
