Radiohead started out mainstream and they sucked.

It is all about a natural progression of things.

Arcade Fire really don't impress me that much yet.

We'll see which direction they go.

I would.....but I'm still waiting on your opinion of Stubborn Tiny Lights' 'The Infinite Regress'

if you liked GY!BE at all, you'd like this album. It's really refreshing PR. Actually, it's one of the more stunning post rock albums in the past 5 years or so. imo.

Manny (or whoever) - Can you recommend an Aphex Twin album for a n00b to start off with?

I was listening to them the other day, but it seems like I could use a gateway.

Selected Ambient Works 85-92 would be where I would start. My favorite by him is I Care Because You Do but it has some tracks in it that could turn off the newbie simply because they can be grating on the ears (Ventolin in particular).

Drukqs is good too but it has 2 sides of Richard James - the drill n bass side that was more or less The Richard James Album and the Come to Daddy ep and the other side was gentle piano ballads - very schizophrenic album but a good one, nonetheless, IMO.
