Return to Hicksville... the Best of Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks - The Blue Thumb Years - 1971-1973. I recommended this LP to B-Bob recently, and also put a bizarre video in the "Bands You've Never Heard Of" thread, or whatever that thread was called, which probably did more to scare people away from Dan and the Lickettes than anything else. It was a clip from the very old Flip Wilson Show, and Dan was flippin' out, I think, from the trip of being on a popular network variety hour. At any rate, this is amazing music. A mixture of jazz, swing, folk, and a lot of other stuff. This LP represents Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks at their best. The first few tracks are live, and the rest from the studio. Simply superb. If you've never heard Dan and the Lickettes, never seen them in concert, then you're in for a treat. I first saw them in the Music Hall in Houston, where they were 3rd or 4th billed in a lineup that was headlined by Joe Cocker, then on his Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour, with Leon Russell, among others. I became an instant fan and saw Dan and the girls many times after that night, most recently some years back at a reunion of the original group at the Paramount Theatre in Austin. They were as good as ever!
Man, you've seen some great shows mate, you must be up there in age! This tour must have been a trip, over 20 folks on stage, two amazing drummers, horn section and transendant back up singers, jealous mate!
I was lucky enough to be the right age at the right time. That was at a venue with terrific acoustics and one that sat around 3200 or so. There was no problem with the size of Cocker's band, because ballets and symphony orchestras played there, as well. Here's a poster of another concert I saw there, and it gives you an idea of how cheap a concert was, and why I went to damn near every one of them worth going to. This is in August of 1969: PS: I never, ever paid a "fee" for a freakin' concert ticket then, either.
this is probably my favorite 'how the eff did I miss out on these guys' band. Don't Look Back. One of the more eclectic albums ever: Brighter, even more eclectic than Handsome Boy Modeling School's 'White People' anyway, it's pure post-rock at times, beat based hip-hop post-metal at others, electronic, mathy, and post-hardcore. eh. Just shut tha fawk up and listen. just hope you enjoy spoken word. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XSSexCJS5p0&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XSSexCJS5p0&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RkW7kOKUcko&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RkW7kOKUcko&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/vXe-mLYJjZM&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/vXe-mLYJjZM&hl=en_US&fs=1?rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Is this like a prelude to the next wave of "indie"? Catching bands making music in their garage before they make a demo, before they even do a local gig, before they get a record deal?
La Dispute has been signed to No Sleep Records since 2008. They also released several EPs before their debut LP. They aren't 'indie'. They are post-hardcore.

Royksopp- Senior Most excellent album I received this morning. One of my all time favourite artists. This album is purely electronic with no vocals. But has a darker sound similar to their all time classic Melody A.M. A step up from the last album release, Junior. <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/cvQ8847K-5E?fs=1&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/cvQ8847K-5E?fs=1&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
