Whoa now, your getting into some real good stuff right there! Tell you've heard live at the Fillmore? EPIC!
I just have the original one that has 7 tracks on it. Blame my wife as I went to the local record store on Monday (it was my birthday and she wanted me to pick out a CD), not really expecting to find anything since most of my stuff is obscure and has to be purchased on-line. But there it was - a used copy of the album that allmusic calls "the best studio album" the Allmans ever did. I already had the Live at Fillmore and Eat a Peach albums plus burned versions of the Dreams box set and the Atlanta live concert double CDs. I'll probably get the Brothers and Sisters album on mp3 tomorrow and would like to get the debut. After that, I'll bounce around in buying any of their other stuff. I normally shy away from live stuff but with the Allmans, live stuff is pretty essential (as you know). I've taken a break from my experimental/avant-garde group that I have been listening to and instead listening to a playlist of Southern Rock. 18 songs with 6 songs each by the Allmans, Skynyrd, and .38 Special, playlist: "Midnight Rider" - The Allman Brothers Band "Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd "Caught Up in You" - .38 Special "Wild Eyed Southern Boys" - .38 Special "Workin' for MCA" - Lynyrd Skynyrd "Melissa" - The Allman Brothers Band "Ramblin' Man" - The Allman Brothers Band "That Smell" - Lynyrd Skynyrd "If I'd Been the One" - .38 Special "Rockin' Into the Night" - .38 Special "Free Bird" (album version) - Lynyrd Skynyrd "Jessica" - The Allman Brothers Band "Blue Sky" - The Allman Brothers Band "Was I Right or Wrong" - Lynyrd Skynyrd "Back Where You Belong" - .38 Special "Hold on Loosely" - .38 Special "What's Your Name" - Lynyrd Skynyrd "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" (the live at Fillmore version) - The Allman Brothers Band Although the death of Hendrix was a monumental blow to music, I would make the argument that the death of Duane Allman was just as big or even bigger blow as he is the greatest slide guitar player ever. To me, the Allmans are the greatest band that the US has ever produced. And I love .38 Special but they were really a lite band compared to the 2 big boys of Southern Rock in Skynyrd and the Allmans (sorry but those 3 bands are all that I have when it comes to Southern Rock - no Marshall Tucker, Molly Hatchet, etc.). Skynyrd rocked and rocked hard with the triple guitar attack but to me the Allmans were the greater musicians (and that is not a slight on Skynyrd); I just don't see guys like Rossington and Collins (assuming that they are in their prime) being able to do some of the stuff that Duane was doing, especially the jazz influenced stuff he was absorbing from Miles and Coltrane. One of these days, I'll be getting another iPod! (120 gig at least)
Here's my buddy's podcast site. If that were the case, ELP might be the greatest band of all time. But which would you rather hear, Tarkus or Won't Get Fooled Again? I guess for some, long instrumentals and virtuoso musicianship = the best. But Lynyrd Skynyrd, in my opinion, clearly wrote more memorable songs than the Allmans- Skynyrd's stuff is literally iconic, from Sweet Home Alabama to Free Bird to Gimme Three Steps. And don't forget Molly Hatchet, Marshall Tucker, and The Outlaws- Especially the 'Laws- Green Grass and High Tides Forever!!! If anything, I would put .38 Special below all those 3 of those bands- 38 Special never wrote anything as great as Take The Highway, Gator Country, and Green Grass... 38 Special was more like the Loverboy of Southern Rock- but I do love You Keep Running Away- IMO best song they ever did. This is the ULTIMATE Southern Rock playlist: Lynyrd Skynyrd- Saturday Night Special The Allman Brothers- Whipping Post Molly Hatchet- Gator Country The Outlaws- Green Grass and High Tides Marshall Tucker Band- Take The Highway .38 Special- You Keep Running Away Blackfoot- Highway Song Atlanta Rhythm Section- So Into You Lynyrd Skynyrd- Tuesday's Gone The Allman Brothers- Elizabeth Reed Molly Hatchet- Flirtin With Disaster The Outlaws- There Goes Another Love Song Marshall Tucker- Heard it in a Love Song .38 Special- Chain Lightning Blackfoot- Train, Train Atlanta Rhythm Section- Champagne Jam Lynyrd Skynyrd- Was I Right or Wrong (best thing they ever did) The Allman Brothers- Mountain Jam (33 minutes!!) Molly Hatchet- Whiskey Man The Outlaws- Hurry Sundown Marshall Tucker- Ramblin .38 Special- Back Where You Belong
The Allman Brothers Band - Brothers and Sisters Pere Ubu - New Picnic Time Ornette Coleman - Change of the Century John Zorn - The Gift Gong (Pierre Moerlen's version) - Downwind
I've been listening to songs separately from their albums for quite some time now. I guess I don't have the patience to hear one band all the way through... Except for Refused. Refused - The Shape of Punk to Come The rest recently is Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti (Before Today, although there are plenty of other songs he's made I would much rather here revamped into hi-fi than the ones he has on that album), Shpongle, Slowdive, Jim Croce, and this song "Thirst for God" by Nicole Kidman (some guy named John).
Scott Walker - Scott 4 Soft Machine - Softs Henry Cow with Slapp Happy - In Praise of Learning The Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach Nick Cave - Tender Prey
