Used to have all their cassettes, never replaced them until now- one of the 10-15 artists for whom I'll buy anything they put out The Kinks: Early Hits Face to Face Something Else Village Green Preservation Society Arthur Lola vs. Powerman Muswell Hillbillies Everybody's in Showbiz Preservation, I & II Soap Opera Schoolboys in Disgrace Sleepwalker Misfits Low Budget Give the People What They Want State of Confusion Word of Mouth Phobia I'd put Ray Davies up among the top 3-4 lyricists of all time.
No credit really deserved. He played Houston 4 times and the most expensive ticket was $6. If you were the least bit aware, music wise, with a car and a few bucks, you'd have to be crazy not to go see him. I was lucky enough to be a huge music fan, had a car, and always scrapped up money to go to concerts. The Kinks, mentioned by dandorotik, usually played the Music Hall and never played for less than 2 hours. They were regular visitors to Houston back then and high on my list of groups I had to see, although I went to see pretty much everyone. Many of the concerts had 3 or 4 groups playing, so you had people like Buffalo Springfield, playing with the Jefferson Airplane as headliners, and billed third. Canned Heat and Vanila Fudge billed 2nd and 3rd at the Music Hall. Those were terrific groups who headlined a club, but rarely a concert at a major venue. Don't be! I'm paying for it now. Most groups were much better live. Not all of them (Crosby, Stills and Nash (and Young) usually couldn't harmonize for **** live, but individually were outstanding), but the vast majority. The pity of it is the lack of good recordings of groups live from the '60's and early '70's, and the limit of the LP. 22 minutes a side, so songs were shortened on most of the records. Extended guitar solos, for instance, were often eliminated that you would hear in concert. (good lord, I bet I've said much of this already in the thread. I just realized how long it is!! )
So you saw Hendrix w/Band of Gypsies? Was it here or in NYC? just wondering. Also didn't know that they made Nexus 7's that far back, Mr. Deckard.
In Houston. Hey, I am not a replicant! Ridley Scott is a poser, who's been trying to make my life a misery by suggesting I am. Besides, the best back then was a Nexus 6. Had I been a replicant, would Mr. Batty been able to give me such a hard time? I think not!
This link has been posted before, but it has a treasure trove of old live recordings. Hours of great stuff. http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/
3rd time listening to hendrix - valley of neptune - the audio quality is so clear - ive never heard hendrix like this! and hyperbole aside, his playing is hot-shi-znit, even by his standards - i dont know when this stuff was tracked, but he was above himself on these sessions.
I'm going to be moving on to the Pixies but first I have been listening to: "Split" - Lush (one of the greatest shoegazing albums ever) "This Nation's Saving Grace" - The Fall TNSG is my first Fall album and I have a feeling that it won't be my last.
You are absolutely correct, sir- the live performances kicked a**- Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, etc.- terrific groups- just think, Buffalo Springfield alone spawned 1/3 of CSN (and 1/2 of CSNY), Neil Young, and part of Poco. Love that Retrospective album. And such a relief to actually hear about music that's not just from this decade- it's great to see all these newer groups, but boy, you miss hearing about the classics on this thread. Another in regular rotation- The White Album. For some reason, it's by far my favorite Beatles album- why?

It's a club banger!!!!!!
You can't go wrong with any Pixies release. I'm going to listen to my "The Jesus and Mary Chain collection as follows Darklands Honey's Dead Psychocandy Stoned & Dethroned Automatic Munki Peel Sessions
The JAMC owns. The Power of Negative Thinking is also cool if you can find it (b-sides and rarities). Speaking of the JAMC... Can't wait for A Place to Bury Strangers next month
Bring earplugs!! Seriously. Here's a vid I capped last time I saw them. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/plUx6QDAhpY&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/plUx6QDAhpY&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> They were louder than when I saw My Bloody Valentine.

That's great! I did not realize that the fellow behind Manitoba was Caribou. I have been going through a phase with them lately. Thanks for the video...it's fantastic!
