I wasn't familiar with the fact that the birthplace of techno was Detroit until fairly recently. Speaking of which I've been jamming Panthu Du Prince. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/XOuGTH5dLpo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/XOuGTH5dLpo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> This is some of the best minimalist techno I've ever heard. He just released a new album as well. One of the best albums of the year.
Yeah, it's really good. Here's the thing. Every song is of good quality. There are a few that are slightly better, but I wouldn't say any of them are stand out singles or anything. But every single track is a fine one. I just got it this weekend, so my opinions are still forming. The good thing is that I'm finding different aspects of the songs to appreciate every time I listen. While still shoegaze material some songs are on the poppy side of shoegazing if that makes sense. I say that as a good thing(for me at least). Now I just need to get the full 7" of Vivian Girls surfs up instead of just the single. It has a cover of the The Beach Boys Girl Don't Tell Me, that is amazing.
Strange Celestial Road - Sun Ra (absolutely amazing disc) The Flowers of Romance - Public Image Ltd (unbelievably scary and dark) Terminal Tower - Pere Ubu
Yeah, I mentioned this a few pages back (before it became PFM's NNM) ----- Listening to this minimal wave mix this morning (don't worry, it's free and legal). Check it out if you're into or interested in early underground new wave/electro/synthpop. Really cool stuff. Stones Throw recently released a minimal wave compilation that's also really good and worth checking out (though not so free) ---- As for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, I wasn't crazy about the LP. I did like the Higher than the Stars EP, though. (I'm a shoegaze fangirl.) I tend to like the fuzzier/noisier side of shoegaze, but Slowdive's 'Souvlaki' is probably my all time fave shoegaze album.
i've been listeining to east village radio a lot lately. they are playing the go betweens "love goes on". <- grrrrrrreat song.
Last night I started a new playlist featuring all the songs I have that are in the "The Real Book" by Hal Leonard. It's going to be a long, jazzy kind of day.
Anything and everything The Kinks have ever done, but especially: The Village Green Preservation Society Arthur Schoolboys in Disgrace Lola vs. Powerman and the Moneygoround Give the People What They Want Word of Mouth Face to Face Greatest Hits (early stuff)
Serena-Maneesh: S-M 2: Abyss in B Minor (Norwegian shoegaze recorded in a cave... bad ass). Riva Starr - If Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemonade (fun, minimal Italian house)
