Any bass line ever recorded by James Jamerson or Larry Graham is nectar to my ears.

    Others I like.....

"I am the Sea/The Real Me" - John Entwistle (The Who)
"Monkey Man" - Bill Wyman (The Rolling Stones)

That's strange because I've also heard him admit that he stole it from the pixies.

It's obvious when you listen to it.

    from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killing_Joke

Killing Joke also sued Nirvana, alleging that the riff for the latter's song "Come As You Are" was copied from the riff for their song "Eighties". The lawsuit was dropped after the sudden death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.

    http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/killing joke forgive dave grohl

Rockers KILLING JOKE have teamed up with FOO FIGHTER star DAVE GROHL on their new album, despite once suing his former band NIRVANA over infringement issues.

Grohl drums on the new Joke album KILLING JOKE and has called the opportunity "a dream come true" after years of covering the British group's songs on Foo Fighter tours.

But he was once an enemy of Joke frontman JAZ COLEMAN, who sued Nirvana over infringement of intellectual property rights in 1992 - claiming the Seattle trio stole his ideas.

Coleman says, "There was tension between the two camps concerning all that c**p. Someone actually asked me if having Dave in the band was his way of doing community service.

"We just put all that behind us. When KURT (COBAIN) went into the other world, Killing Joke dropped any lawsuits.

"When he died, there was suddenly a poor little kid out there who, no matter what amount of money you talk about, hasn't got a dad. We're all fathers. So it was all just dropped."

OMG, you're not kidding. We've gone round and round about this tune in a drum forum I visit.

Basically, during the verses, the guitar plays upbeats even though they sound like downbeats. Those quarter notes you hear are not on 1, 2, 3, and 4, they're on the "&" of 1, 2, 3, and 4. The bass drum, which sounds like it's on the "&" of 2 and 4 is actually right on 2 and 4.

In the video, Sting is hitting the neck of his bass on 2 and 4 (which of course sounds like the "&" of 2 and 4) as if to taunt us and say "see, we get it and you don't!"

"E-bow" aka Untitled #6 - Sigur Ros (Georg Holm)
"Olsen Olsen" - Sigur Ros (Georg Holm)
    "Otherside" - RHCP (Flea)
"Disintegration" - The Cure (Simon Gallup)
"Doctor Jimmy" - The Who (John Entwistle)
    "Roundabout" - Yes (Chris Squire)
"1963" - New Order (Peter Hook)
"Spirits in the Material World" - The Police (Sting)
"Under Pressure" - Queen and David Bowie (John Deacon)
"Super Freak" - Rick James (Rick James)
"One of These Days" - Pink Floyd (Roger Waters)
    "Badge" - Cream (Jack Bruce)
    "Freewill" - Rush (Geddy Lee)
"Around the World" - RHCP (Flea)
"Ramble On" - Led Zeppelin (John Paul Jones)

There's probably more but that is all I can think of for now. Pretty much any song that has Entwistle, Squire, Flea, and Peter Hook are ones that I like the bass to.

It's a combination of reggae, ska and West African rhythms all mixed together. It is incredibly difficult because the groove leads you to believe, as you mentioned, the upbeats are actually the downbeats. So, when the snare does the pickup into the chorus, you're all screwed up.

It's like listening to the intro of a song and, for whatever reason, you cannot hear it with the downbeat in the right place. There is a song by Harvey Danger where the guitar intro comes in in an odd place and I can't get the groove until the drums kick in no matter how many times I listen. It's just irritating.

That's kinda like the last bar of the theme song from Full House. There is this kick ass bass thing in the last measure that freaks me out.

Other things like this include the soundtrack to Taking Care of Business (mainly because it was Stanley Clarke and Stewart Copeland) and theme songs from shows like Barney Miller and Night Court. There are so many little bass things like that.

I've been seriously considering, just for the fun of it, doing an instrumental bass and percussion CD of nothing but TV theme songs. I think it would be a blast.
