One of the greatest Live Concert DVD's you will ever see. A must have for any Queen fan. That Live Aid performance was incredible. I remember watching that. They blew everyone else away, on both sides of the Atlantic. Favorite song: Need Your Lovin Tonight (a real rocker)
Damn, Bob, I was just about to post that (sans picture). To all - that is an amazing concert/cd/dvd that should be checked out. Speaking of concerts: thegary if you have not already you should check out the "Stop Making Sense" and, more recently "David Byrne Live at Union Chapel" DVD's. Good stuff.
I remember being in 8th grade in Catholic School. We had one of the old intercom systems where you could hold a button down and say something and the whole school heard it (1st thru 8th). It was our last week of school and we were playing "A Night at the Opera" on the old record player in the back of the room. During the song "Death on Two Legs" there is a verse that says "and now you can kiss my a$$ goodbye". Someone hit the intercom button and the whole school (1st thru 8th) heard it. The principal (a surly old nun) was not very happy.
I have not seen Live At The Bowl, but can't imagine it being better then Wembley. They played 2 nights at Wembley and one show after that, somewhere outside of London, which would be their last concert. Watching Freddie sing "Who Wants To Live Forever" sends chills down your spine.
I was listening to "Who Wants to Live Forever" this morning and just thinking about that song and in the context of how Freddie Mercury was taken from this world caused tears to come to my eyes - no joke. One of the most powerful songs I have ever heard.
The thing about this performance was his voice cracks a couple of times during the song. Almost struggling to reach some of the notes. Probably due to being the end of a long European tour, or perhaps he may have known this would be one of his last performances in front the bands most rabid fans.
I'll let you know. I ordered the Wembley DVD today. I got _On Fire_ and it was sublime Looking at the Queen concertography, it turns out that the show I saw at the Summit was on the _Hot Space_ tour, which makes it the same tour as the _On Fire_ DVD. That show was the best live show I have ever seen. The _On Fire_ DVD almost matches it.
This show was my first ever concert. (Rodeos don't count.) I was in 6th grade. Went with my older brother. What the heck were my parents thinking???
LOL! How old was your brother? Parents can do funny things. Maybe they were/are just cool. I remember our family going to see the movie Blow Up, and sitting in the Loew's (I think) Theatre during the orgy scene, wondering how I had lucked out... peeking at my parents, and wondering if this was a surprise to them, or not. BTW, that reminded me of the scene in Almost Famous, when the young guy's sister, when she's moving out, whispers in his ear, "Look under the bed... it will free your mind," and leaves him a suitcase full of albums. Great scene.
I have watched the Stop Making Sense DVD a few times, and I love it. Have you noticed... I can't remember the song (maybe Naive Melody) where the bass line goes on even after Tina Weymouth stopped playing. It might be that there were two bass lines, and one was on synth, and one was on the bass. Anyway I'm curious if anyone else has seen this, and has an explanation. The song is obviously not totally lip synched or anything so I was curious as to the cause.
Actually, we don't know that. The song was written in 1984-85, and most peg Fred's diagnosis around 1987 or possibly later. It sure sounds like he knew something was up, but the fact was he was a pretty healthy cat when the song was written, and the impetus behind the lyrics was the movie 'Highlander.'
Well, you do have to keep one thing in mind. This is really a movie as opposed to "one concert." What they did was performed three night with the cameras set up in different places each night. Byrne had choreographed everything down to the minor details so visually they were pretty seamless. The final product, then, is a mix of audio and video from different nights. So sometimes things seem a little off, but that is why. It was seen as a movie. I don't recall what you are talking about specifically...but that song definitely has a lot of synth work going on, providing some bassline...so maybe it didn't even matter for that song. When you watched the DVD did you change the audio each time? It is interesting. They have a stereo mix, a dolby 5.1 concert mix (which is the most accurate concert sound) and a dolby 5.1 studio mix, which is the most produced, equalized, balanced, etc.. And, of course, the David Byrne self-interview is worth watching.
And yet none of you has mentioned... Get Down, Make Love OR The entire friggin' Flash Gordon soundtrack .... tsk tsk tsk -- droxford
Yes I remember the different audio mixes. We definitely played around with those. I wish I could remember what song. It was my friend's DVD that he got for Christmas, and we watched that thing anytime we had a spare moment. I should probably pick up my own copy. What song was it where David Byrne had the lamp on stage during the concert? Ahh it's pointless. We watched the whole thing a couple of times, and then skipped around a lot, so my memory of what comes where is totally shot.
