Yea, I know - it is a good thing I met you in person or I would never be able to tell if you are being serious or not. You are the scourge of the BBS, Fatty.
I'm a big fan. Here is the order I would get their releases : 1. Night At The Opera 2. Day At The Races 3. News To The World 4. The Game 5. Jazz I also like the last two releases though they are less rocky : The Miracle Innuendo Finally these two releases have their moments: The Works A Kind Of Magic And I would also recommends getting the DVD: On Fire at the Bowl (from the Hot Space tour with Queen hitting on all cylinders).
Also, "A Night at the Opera" is amazing, but it's not a must-have. I've listened to that album as much as I have to "Hot Space" or "The Miracle." If you're enjoying what is on "Classic Queen" (a good but flawed greatest hits set that favors the 80s stuff) then you'll like just about anything you purchase.
I, too, love Queen. I got into them in the 80's, so it was after their true glory years, but I did get to hear their Highlander (and Flash Gordon) work when it came out. Even though there is some cheese, it is still good stuff. I don't know where they would rank on my "all-time" list, not at the very top and probably under Talking Heads/David Byrne for sheer "like factor" but they are high up.
Was I the only guy who didn't realize Mercury was gay until after he died? I liked their music, but never put two and two together. There isn't enough Queen on the radio with the exception of: *Another One Bites The Dust *We Will Rock You/We Are The Champions and *Bohemian Rhapsody A couple of my favorites: *Killer Queen *Fat Bottom Girls
I have to back Sir Jackie Chiles up with a nod to Queen Killer. Many bands inspire people to talk about their guitarists, or drummers, and how masterful they are at their instruments. They do nearly impossible things on them. (Van Halen, Rush, etc.) Very few bands encourage people to talk about how incredible the bass playing is but it does happen (The Who, Joy Division/New Order) Queen is one of only two bands I know of that really impress me with how hard the vocal stylings etc. are. Even for people who know how to sing, some of the songs are difficult. To come up with those parts and write songs like that is really a gift. That is in addition to Brian May who is a fantastic guitarist.
Just because a guy wears leather and is in a band called "Queen" doesn't always mean anything. I guess you are going to tell me Boy George doesn't like girls, too?
A friend of mine bought the new Live-Aid dvd set. I watched Queen's entire performance last weekend. Freddy was just on another level from the rest of the world. He put everything he had into it yet it seemed almost effortless. You just watch in awe.
queen was great and freddie could flat out belt. queen is such feel-good music, you could almost say it was gay (just kidding). rimbaud, i'm with you about talking heads. remain in light is one of my very favorite albums. it still sounds as fresh, original, and aggressive as anything out there today. manny and whoever else, i just bought the new matt sweeney and bonnie prince billy cd called "superwolf"- it is absolutely haunting, dark and full of grace.
Sounds like a bright fellow. As for individual songs, I like, among others: Killer Queen Death on Two Legs Love of My Life You're My Best Friend Bohemian Rhapsody Lazing on a Sunday Afternoon Spread Your Wings Fight from the Inside It's Late Play the Game Need Your Loving Tonight Crazy Little Thing ... A great thing about QUEEN that hasn't been mentioned is that they ALL could write good songs. I don't know for sure, but wouldn't be surprised if all four of them had each penned a top ten hit.
BTW, The Game was the second record I ever bought. I was in fith grade ~ 1980. Another One Bites The Dust ruled.
In all seriousness. I absolutely loved Mercury's voice. One of the most powerful singers ever, if not the very best. He was an incredible talent. Who wants to live forever Play the Game Crazy little thing called love Bohemian Rhapsody You're my best friend
I know I saw them twice in '77. The Coliseum early in the year, during their Queen Lizzy tour, and the Summit at the end of the year. This is the set list from their Madison Square Garden concert, which was about 2 weeks after the Houston one in February, '77. (kudos to Andy's Queen Page (http://www.pemcom.demon.co.uk/queen/, where I found this on the net. I saw so many concerts, that it's hard for me, sometimes, to remember which album a band was promoting, just which date they played Houston, etc.) Ogre Battle White Queen (as it began) Killer Queen The Millionaire Waltz You're My Best Friend Bring Back That Leroy Brown Brighton Rock White Man The Prophet's Song Somebody To Love 39 You Take My Breath Away Bohemian Rhapsody In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited Now I'm Here Big Spender Jailhouse Rock Saturday Night's All Right For Fighting Stupid Cupid Be Bop A Lula Liar That sounds about right. They played the Summit towards the end of the year, promoting Day at the Races. Needless to say, the concerts were amazing!
