Buddy Guy is probably the best of the lot, surprised SRVaughan is not up there also. Jimmi H. stole Buddy Guy's blues style and is a bit overrated in my opinion. Not that he wasn't a great but his body of work is so small. Townsend and Richards is who I would replace and I'm a big fan of both.
Also Clapton was pre Hendrix by the way.

These lists are so self serving.

Any "greatest guitartist" list that doesn't include Tony Iommi and Keith Richards isn't a "greatest guitarist" list at all.

That this thread is 3 pages in with no Iommi mention at all tells me y'all don't know much about rock & roll guitarists.

    And that's just sad.

god i hate these ****ing lists.

How does someone come up with this ****?

He had a short life during his rock career but randy rhodes was one of the most talented guitarists and imo one of the greatest.

There are locks like hendrix, clapton, paige, SRV, EVH but they really **** everything else up.

John Petrucci is wayyy underrated imo

if eric clapton had died in 1970 he would be more respected. the only thing he has done in the last 40 years is push his baby out a window and write a song about it.

Merle Travis was one of the most influential guitarists of the 50s. Here is an example of Travis Pickin'

The only song where Hendrix sounds even slightly like Buddy Guy is Red House. Otherwise, the similarity in their styles is vastly overstated, and frankly, Buddy Guy can't hold a candle to Hendrix. Buddy Guy can claim he influenced Hendrix, but he ignores the fact that so did another 1000 guitarists.

What separates Hendrix from everyone else is the fact that he was masterful in all facets of the guitar - as a rhythm player, as a lead player, as a textural player and as a "feel" player. When you look at the other guys mentioned, none of them have anything close to a similar command of the instrument. And more importantly, he synthesized the musical styles of the time better than anyone else - you can hear elements of blues, R&B, psychedelia, garage rock, jazz and even bits of classical and showtune in his songs, all of which is imprinted with Hendrix's unique stamp.

To a certain extent, that gives him an unfair advantage over the other guys mentioned in these lists - his ability as an arranger and musician was so much better than just about everyone (Jimmy Page being the exception) else. There are guys who can play faster and cleaner, but none of them play with more musicality in so many different contexts.

I'll be in the neighborhood later on, and I was wondering if maybe you wanted to get some frozen yogurt, or perhaps a whole meal of food

I know squat about guitarists, but Roy Clark is one of the greatest entertainers ever and I've loved his guitar playing and singing since I was a little kid watching Hee Haw. A great guy, too, from everything I've head about him.

This video shows him being a complete goofball, but his talents still are showcased and the song still sounded awesome :

steve vai is talented as ****, but not someone that plays stuff you can listen to stand alone imo.

Buckethead, satriani etc I can just sit and listen to stand alone for hours

Shouldn't Bruce Springstein be on that list? Before the whole "born in the usa" stuff he rocked on guitar.

and this has to be some of the fastest shredding I've ever seen and it doesn't lose the music element when it comes to speed.
