When I first listened to it yesterday I was tripped out and trying to figure out where I'd heard it before. Then it registered.
Great show. Wish I wasn't so drunk for that set. Looking forward to this year. In my defense I was kissing a British chick during it.
The more I think about it, the more I feel that there is some definite dub influences on this album (maybe dubstep but I am more familiar with dub).
I know Thom is a big fan of and has worked with Flying Lotus. Can definitely hear some of that influence here.
Have it downloaded but have been unable to listen to it. Kid is sick and have had no time. The suspense is killing me.
Well it isn't an easy-listening, accessible album like In Rainbows was. After about 7-8 listens now the album has started to reveal itself a bit more. First impression was kind of like "I like this, but it isn't anything too groundbreaking". "Codex" kind of ****ed me right in the face. I wasn't really expecting them to take "Pyramid Song" and strip it down into something even more haunting and beautiful. Interestingly enough if you check out the track times... Pyramid Song and Codex are nearly the same length (4:47/4:48). Coincidence? Perhaps. But perhaps we're in for more crazy conspiracy theories, like maybe TKOL syncs up with Amnesiac or something even more wild. Its still taking me a while to let this album sink in, I feel it is definitely a grower. I am starting to really get into some of the other tracks, such as "Morning Mister Magpie" and "Little by Little". "Lotus Flower" is quite satiable as well. I really don't know how to rate it yet, or where it stacks up with the 7 other Radiohead albums (I'll go ahead and say better than Pablo Honey, but thats not really saying much). It just seems like a lot going on in such a short album. A lot of reviews I was reading seemed to not know whether they've done something genius or something too "out of the blue" for its own good. I need to listen to it about 400 more times I think.
So I've been listening pretty heavy all weekend and I like it. Probably a lot right now. Codex is great as are Bloom, Morning Mr. Magpie, Lotus Flower and Separator. Even Give Up the Ghost has grown on me though I like the live version better still. I won't rate it compared to the others just yet. After a few weeks or months I think I can accurately say where it stands with those. I just wish it weren't so short.
I read that if you ordered the special vinyl edition for this album, it states you are receiving to vinyl albumbs. And the last song on the album ends saying "you think this is it, but your wrong" As well, consider there are many recent songs Radiohead or Thom York have played that are new and not on KOL. Such as Present Tense, Let Me Take control/Chris Hodge, Super Collider and even These are My Twisted Words (which was released earlier this year). There is some speculation that the mailed out vinyl versions (which I don't think have come out yet) will contain the second album and Radiohead will release it for digital download fairly soon. As far as the album, its my least favorite of all the RH albums. I still really like it though and am on about listen number five. Codex, Little by Little, Lotus Flower and Give up the Ghost are all good. I have always wanted them to do The Bends #2 or something like that but I realize they just don't want to and I am ok with that. Even someone like Johnny Greenwood (a great guitar player) Seems now more interested in manufacturing his own electronic whatever it is. I just know that there have been 8 LPs and they are all amazing in their own way. My rankings- OKC The Bends Kid A In Rainbows Hail to the Thief Pablo Honey Amnesiac King of Limbs
FINALLY gave this a few proper listens. I will state that I am a huge fan (as in taking red-eye flights on weeknights to see them all over the US) so this probably isn't an unbiased psuedo-review. I love it. Fortunately I read a lot of your reviews before I actually got to listen to the album so I wasn't in shock at the vast differences between In Rainbows and this album. I remember being so pumped when Kid A came out and then being in shock at how different it was from OK Computer. Now I love both of those albums equally. I see this as a dub influenced Amnesiac. Very different and it will for sure be a grower, but I really think it works and I am happy that, once again, they have decided to go in a totally different direction. I like both halves of the album, which almost seems like 2 different albums. I have not listened to it enough to really give a song by song review, but there isn't a song that I dislike at this point. I don't see this as an album that a casual fan will really enjoy. It doesn't have the songs that just pop out at you like In Rainbows did. However, for people who understand that sometimes this band makes amazing music that takes time to digest, I think in time it will be considered a great RH album. Can't really rank it yet, but it has some serious potential to be in the upper half of my favorite RH albums. I already think it is better than Pablo and Hail to the Theif.

My ranking of Radiohead albums based on my personal preference: 1 - Kid A 2 - In Rainbows 3 - OK Computer 4 - The Bends 5 - The King of Limbs 6 - Amnesiac 7 - Hail to the Thief 8 - Pablo Honey
Distributing 100 Points 1. OK Computer (40) 2. Kid A (20) 3. Bends (19) 4. In Rainbows (10) 5. Amnesiac (4) 6. Hail to the Thief (4) 7. Kings of Limbs (2) 8. Pablo Honey (1) So yeah, the past 10 years I haven't been too much of a fan. Really only loved one of their last four albums.
Me too. Love that one. I tried remembering what I thought of it initlally to give this one perspective. I may have to go back and find that thread.
In Rainbows / OK Computer are my favorite albums, along with Kid A and The Bends they form probably the 4 most solid albums a band has ever produced. After that, I put Amnesiac and The King of Limbs on the 2nd tier. Hail to the Thief and Pablo Honey really don't do much for me.
The Album is pretty solid. My rankings are as follows: 1) OK Computer 2) Kid A 3) In Rainbows 4) The Bends 5) Amnesiac 6) The King of Limbs 7) Hail to the Thief 8) Pablo Honey Also, for those of you who hate the length of the album, my buddy placed two other Radiohead tracks on the album. I thought it to be a sin to do this, but it actually fits in pretty nice. 1) These Are My Twisted Words 2) Bloom 3) Morning Mr. Magpie 4) Little By Little 5) Feral 6) Lotus Flower 7) Codex 8) Give Up The Ghost 9) Separator 10) Harry Patch (In Memory Of) Those two tracks book ending the other actually fit in quite nice with the rest of the album.
Does it seem like this Radiohead album is just kind of the same throughout? There are no real changes of tempo in the songs, more just Thom's Falsetto wailing over electronic beats, which has been done in the past but usually leads to something. A sort of climax of a song. Every song on this album ends just as it began, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but sure doesn't make you look forward to anything. You just get more wailing.
"I heard that ****ing Radiohead record and I just go, 'What?!'... Them writing a song about a ****ing tree? Give me a ****ing break! A thousand year old tree? Go **** yourself! You'd have thought he'd have written a song about a modern tree or one that was planted last week. You know what I mean?" - Liam Gallagher never was a big oasis fan, but the new band (beady eye) is actually pretty good. andy bell is a great songwriter so they arent missing noel too much. <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/HfdYY1Iundo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Anyone else download the 2 additional tracks - Supercollider and The Butcher? Got an email a couple of days ago from Radiohead with a link to download the 2 songs - they're free for anyone who downloaded TKOL. They're interesting, but feel more like sketches than completed songs. Still, Radiohead's sketches are usually more interesting than the average band's songs, so I'll probably give them some closer listens over the next few days.
