Harrisment...need more detailed review. Stuck at work and cannot download here and it's fooking killing me!
I have listened all the way through and my thoughts: - As Harrisment said, this album is very "Eraser"ish and there is not much guitar in it at all - The last 3 tracks are the best, IMO, of the album - "Feral" is a cool track that is very atmospheric and would definitely fit right in on "Kid A" - Like all Radiohead albums, you can't judge it on one listen. I am sure that I will hear things on my tenth, twentieth, and even thirtieth listen. - Kid A has ALWAYS been my all-time favorite Radiohead album so I was very disappointed in Amnesiac as I felt it just didn't measure up to the album before it. However, in time I have learned to appreciate Amnesiac. I have a feeling this will be the same with In Rainbows/The King of the Limbs. In Rainbows was the album that we all knew they could do (it should have been the follow-up to Kid A and Amnesiac, not Hail to the Thief). The King of the Limbs, on the surface, is the disappointing follow-up to it just like Amnesiac was for Kid A. Yet, Radiohead isn't a band that you can listen to on the surface. You have to dig deeper with them. - I also agree that there will probably be another album coming - it might be next year but I don't think there is going to be a 3 and a half year wait like there was from In Rainbows to this one. Blake, I want to listen through this at least 4 more times before giving a detailed review track by track. However, I do like "Feral" and "Separator" the best after the first listen.
go to youtube. search radiohead. when the page loads, go to search options, sort by upload date. most of the album is up.
i am not enjoying the reviews at all. radiohead - guitar = groogrux no likey. with that said, i'm gonna go jam "just" now.
I think the important thing to remember is that Radiohead is one of those bands that whenever they release a new album, it is met with great anticipation. It is just natural for people to think they are going to be getting the next "OK Computer" or the next "Kid A". They have to live up to incredible pressure but that is because their discography is so satisfying. If you take this album for what it is and strip off all these unrealistic expectations, it is still a damn good album. With that being said, there was a little feeling of underwhelment to be honest with you. Yet, as I said before, you have to give yourself multiple listens before you can judge this one. Looks like the next new album to anticipate for me will be either The Strokes' "Angles" or Panda Bear's "Tomboy". If Animal Collective's next studio album is even better than "Merriweather Post Pavilion" then they may have surpassed Radiohead as the best alternative band out there today......................................................................................................................................................................................................... KIDDING!!!! Although they might be able to close the gap a little bit
I have already played through it 4 times at work this morning. It is pretty awesome, and I am enjoying it. I just hoped for a longer album.
Really digging Bloom (opening track) on second round of listening. I love how Thom has honed his vocals over the decades, he has always been good but he just keeps on refining his craft with every foray. After finishing the last sentence, I’m getting caught in the rhythmic groove of Morning Mr Magpie, excellent! Loved the Lotus Flower vid, never in my life would have expected Thom to dance in what appears to be a purposely choreographed video. Lotus Flower is the most straight forward track in the album (maybe I’m already biased because that’s the one I´ve listened the most), good choice for a first single. Disagree with El Manny, personally, I’ve gotten a better first impression from this album than with In Rainbows, maybe because of what he said about In Rainbows being the album I knew they could make. To finish it off, I’ve noticed people are leaning over the closing part of the album, the first part of the album is the one that demands more listening time, it may prove to be equally appealing as the last part which is quieter, that’s what has happened to me on the second round.
pretty good. now onto playing: guess the next song on arcade fire pandora station. more bloody marys...
Ugh, yeah...I probably won't like it very much either. I guess it's time for me to give up hope that an OK Computer follow-up will ever be made. Yes, I've still been holding onto hope for that.
I was going to post that earlier in the thread but I didn't want to get CRUCIFIED by the Radiohead fanboys. I don't like their trend of less guitar - more electronics. Johhny is one of the more innovative guitar players around but it seems like he's somehow above just playing the guitar anymore. Too bad. Hey Johnny, put down the laptop and pick up the guitar, please.
Here's my thoughts on the first half of the album, which is my least favorite as of now. I think the second half is outstanding even after just a few listens, so I'm sure I'll totally be gushing about it after a few days. This album is a grower, just like most of their albums. It's not quite the shock that Kid A was when it came out, but if you're expecting a sequel to In Rainbows, you'll be let down initially. My first impression of it is better than how I felt about In Rainbows, but I came to adore that album over time, so we'll see. As I said, Bloom is my least favorite track at this point, but a lot of people on atease love it, so I have a feeling it will grow on me. I'm not crazy about the way it starts out, but it gets better as the song goes on and starts to sound more like Radiohead and less like Thom Yorke solo. Horns in the second half of the song really bring it together and along with the stuttering beats make it sound similar to an Amnesiac track. Morning Mr Magpie is an older song, originally recorded in 2002 I think. Having said that it sounds more like their recent work than you would expect. The closest comparison I can think of is "These Are My Twisted Words." Love the bass line on this track. Really funky and makes you want to move. Little By Little is just what you'd expect from this band, and will probably be a favorite of those that are looking for a repeat of In Rainbows. Plenty of guitar on this one. A classic Radiohead song. Feral - It's creepy and full of bleeps and bloops. I said Kid A earlier, but another comparison I read that works is The Gloaming. This is a song I can't wait to listen to on vinyl with the lights off.
I haven't listened to the whole thing so I'll reserve full judgement but my first thought when listening to the video this morning was, "someone got a new MacBook and garage band." Are the other songs on YouTube yet?
Haven't heard it yet. I have no problem with a more electronic album. I do like Johnny's playing quite a bit, and play guitar myself, but I also like Eraser and the EP's quite a bit from Yorke, so will just have to see. The fact that there is underwhelment makes me think I may like it. Mostly because that is such a cool word.
In case any of you guys wanted it, I've put it up on dropbox Spoiler http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7138298/The King Of Limbs.zip
Considering it's your taste thats fair enough, but I think Jonny would consider himself more of a composer and multi-intrumentalist than a guitar player, his not a guitarist anymore. The Eraser comparisons are bogus, Radiohead the band is not going to sit down and make something as stripped, The Eraser was conceived to be barebones, this album is not.
This completely made me think of this... Back to the topic. It took me a long time to get into Radiohead. I did really like In Rainbows, and will check this one out.
